Religion, tradition\u00a0or health didn’t even come up Thursday as a judge tossed\u00a0San Francisco’s proposed circumcision ban off the November ballot.<\/p>\n
Instead, San Francisco Superior Court Judge Loretta M. Giorgi ruled that state law specifically bars local\u00a0government from\u00a0dictating practices to\u00a0health care professionals.<\/p>\n
The judge confirmed an earlier ruling in favor of\u00a0San Francisco’s\u00a0Jewish Community Relations Council, which is suing the City of San Francisco\u00a0and local activist\u00a0Lloyd Schofield.<\/p>\n
Schofield\u00a0gathered more than 12,000 signatures on petitions seeking the ban — which would have\u00a0levied a $1,000 fine for\u00a0circumcision on under-age males and made the practice\u00a0a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail.<\/p>\n
Schofield\u00a0says male circumcision is brutal.\u00a0He compares is to\u00a0female\u00a0genital mutilation\u00a0— although the parallels were challenged by health professionals. Momentum for the ban slowed when\u00a0campaign material\u00a0promoting the ban included racially offensive comic strips\u00a0reminescent of Nazi propaganda that during the 1930-40s depicted Jews with large noses and swarthy features.<\/p>\n
