{"id":4823,"date":"2011-08-18T14:14:41","date_gmt":"2011-08-18T18:14:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/news\/?p=4823"},"modified":"2011-08-16T18:20:47","modified_gmt":"2011-08-16T22:20:47","slug":"saudis-deport-pentecostals-to-india-after-raiding-illegal-church","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/news\/2011\/08\/saudis-deport-pentecostals-to-india-after-raiding-illegal-church","title":{"rendered":"Saudis deport Pentecostals to India after raiding illegal church"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two Indian Christians of a thriving Pentecostal house church in Saudi Arabia are back in their home country after\u00a0being unexpectedly released from a\u00a0Saudi\u00a0prison, a church official has confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>Vasantha Sekhar Vara, 28, and Nese Yohan, 31, members of Riyadh&#8217;s &#8220;Rejoice in the Church of the Lord&#8221; congregation, were detained in January while organizing a Bible study group in one of the apartments where their 70-member church of mainly Indian\u00a0nationals gathered, according to Worthy News, an internet news site.<\/p>\n<p>Christian worship is illegal in Saudi Arabia, where only Muslim services are allowed by law.<\/p>\n<p>Both served 45-days of \u201cpre-trial detention\u201d on charges of attempted Christian conversion.<\/p>\n<p>They were later moved from the police station to a jail in Riyadh, the capital, where they were held without trial, Worthy News learned.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, \u201cOn July 12 they were released by authorities and send back to India,\u201d said a church elder. Worthy News did not identify the official, citing security concerns as his church has come under pressure to halt its services.
