\nAn interfaith coalition of religious leaders is congratulating
\nthe Bush administration for reaching an agreement with North Korea to
\nshutdown its nuclear weapons facilities.
\n“The agreement with North Korea demonstrates the value of diplomacy
\nin preventing the spread of nuclear weapons,” the leaders said in a
\nstatement released Tuesday. The statement was signed by Catholic and
\nEpiscopal bishops as well as Presbyterian, evangelical and Muslim
\nleaders.
\n“It validates the preferential use of words, rather than war, as a
\nresponse to conflict. Our religious traditions teach that efforts should
\nbe made to explore every alternative in resolving a conflict before
\ngoing to war,” the faith leaders said.
\nThe State Department announced Saturday that it had been informed
\nthat North Korea had shut down its Yongbyon nuclear complex. The
\nInternational Atomic Energy Agency confirmed Wednesday that five
\nfacilities, four at Yongbyon and one at Taechon, have been shut down.
\nThe interfaith statement, developed by Faithful Security: The
\nNational Religious Partnership on the Nuclear Weapons Danger, was signed
\nby a dozen leaders of Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths.
\nThe signatories included Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine
\nJefferts Schori; Sayyid M. Syeed, national director of the Islamic
\nSociety of North America; the Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick, stated clerk of
\nthe Presbyterian Church (USA); Rabbi Gerald Serotta of Temple Shalom in
\nChevy Chase, Md.; Bishop Thomas G. Wenski, chairman of the U.S.
\nConference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on International Policy; and
\nRonald J. Sider, president of Evangelicals for Social Action.
\nThey asked the administration to consider a similar strategy with
\nIran.
\n“The United States should engage Iran in direct negotiations without
\npreconditions to achieve the goal of preventing the spread of nuclear
\nweapons and enhancing regional security,” they wrote.
\nFaithful Security, based in Goshen, Ind., developed after the late
\nRev. William Sloane Coffin, a Protestant social activist, convened a
\nmeeting of religious leaders in 2005 to discuss how faith leaders could
\naddress the elimination of nuclear weapons.
