The statement was signed by Catholic and<br \/>\nEpiscopal bishops as well as Presbyterian, evangelical and Muslim<br \/>\nleaders.<br \/>\n&#8220;It validates the preferential use of words, rather than war, as a<br \/>\nresponse to conflict. Our religious traditions teach that efforts should<br \/>\nbe made to explore every alternative in resolving a conflict before<br \/>\ngoing to war,&#8221; the faith leaders said.<br \/>\nThe State Department announced Saturday that it had been informed<br \/>\nthat North Korea had shut down its Yongbyon nuclear complex. The<br \/>\nInternational Atomic Energy Agency confirmed Wednesday that five<br \/>\nfacilities, four at Yongbyon and one at Taechon, have been shut down.<br \/>\nThe interfaith statement, developed by Faithful Security: The<br \/>\nNational Religious Partnership on the Nuclear Weapons Danger, was signed<br \/>\nby a dozen leaders of Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths.<br \/>\nThe signatories included Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine<br \/>\nJefferts Schori; Sayyid M. Syeed, national director of the Islamic<br \/>\nSociety of North America; the Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick, stated clerk of<br \/>\nthe Presbyterian Church (USA); Rabbi Gerald Serotta of Temple Shalom in<br \/>\nChevy Chase, Md.; Bishop Thomas G. Wenski, chairman of the U.S.<br \/>\nConference of Catholic Bishops&#8217; Committee on International Policy; and<br \/>\nRonald J. Sider, president of Evangelicals for Social Action.<br \/>\nThey asked the administration to consider a similar strategy with<br \/>\nIran.<br \/>\n&#8220;The United States should engage Iran in direct negotiations without<br \/>\npreconditions to achieve the goal of preventing the spread of nuclear<br \/>\nweapons and enhancing regional security,&#8221; they wrote.<br \/>\nFaithful Security, based in Goshen, Ind., developed after the late<br \/>\nRev.
