Singer Amy Winehouse has been found dead at her home in Camden, north London, at the age of 27.<\/p>\n
Winehouse joins a long list of rock singers who met their demise at age 27, including Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison.<\/p>\n
The London Ambulance Service was called to her apartment just after 4 p.m. on Saturday, but emergency workers were unable to save her life, according to Sky News, whose\u00a0sources said the singer was “beyond help” when paramedics arrived.<\/p>\n
“On arrival, officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene,” a police statement said.<\/p>\n
Officially her death was listed as “unexplained” pending an autopsy.<\/p>\n
Singer Michelle Gayle told Sky News that Amy’s father Mitch was “devastated.”<\/p>\n
A number of rock singers have died at 27, prompting the term “the 27 Club.”<\/p>\n
Brian Jones, a founding member of the Rolling Stones drowned at 27 on\u00a0July 3, 1969. Janis Joplin died of a heroin overdose at age 27 on\u00a0October 4, 1970, after\u00a0recording classics such as “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Mercedes Benz” and “Piece of My Heart.”<\/p>\n
Guitar virtuoso Jimi Hendrix of “Purple Haze” fame had overdosed on pills only a few days earlier in a London apartment on\u00a0September 18, 1970.\u00a0Jim Morrison of the Doors died at 27 less than a year later leaving behind such rock classics as\u00a0“Light My Fire” and “People Are Strange.”<\/p>\n
Ronald “Pigpen” McKernan, a founding member of the Grateful Dead, died at 27 on March 8, 1973. Pete Ham, the lead singer of the Beatles soundalike band Badfinger committed suicide on April 24, 1975.<\/p>\n
The Seattle grunge group Nirvana’s lead singer Curt Cobain died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at 27 on\u00a0April 5, 1994.<\/p>\n
Winehouse had cancelled all tour dates and engagements last month\u00a0after a series of puzzling public appearances. In Belgrade, Yugoslavia, she suffered the indignity of being booed off the stage.<\/p>\n
Plans for her funeral services are pending.<\/p>\n
