It surfaced more recently when Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) was fighting to retain his Nevada Senate seat (his opponent\u2019s pastor accused him of belonging to a cult that \u201cpretends to embrace Christianity\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>And in the past few weeks the term has appeared in articles in the <em>Economist<\/em> and the<em> New York Times<\/em>, and also in other newspapers that carry less intellectual heft.<\/p>\n<p>The British <em>Independent<\/em>, for instance, was taken with the thought that if you Google \u201cMormon\u201d and \u201ccult,\u201d you get 2.7 million hits.<\/p>\n<p>Few journalists use the term themselves, of course, as an adjective of choice.
