With the national debt taking up most of Congress\u2019s summer efforts,\u00a0Congressman Charlie Rangel made a special plea to his colleagues that made all the Sunday morning news shows — telling fellow Congressman that in voting on whether to raise the debt ceiling, they should consider: \u201cWhat would Jesus do this weekend?\u201d<\/p>\n
Former presidential hopeful, Arkansas governor and\u00a0Southern Baptist\u00a0pastor\u00a0Mike Huckabee\u00a0responded that\u00a0the first thing Jesus would do is to pay His taxes.<\/p>\n
\u201cSorry, Charlie,\u201d Huckabee said, noting that\u00a0Congressman Rangel is \u201ca guy who had trouble paying his taxes\u201d\u2013 something Jesus never had problems with.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe ought to take a lesson from Jesus\u2026 that\u2019s what Jesus would do, pay his taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n
As for what he wouldn\u2019t do, Huckabee argues, \u201cI think we kind of know that he wouldn\u2019t run a $14 trillion debt and stick it on the grandkids.\u201d<\/p>\n
After reading a passage from the Bible, Huckabee was then asked whether the religious discussion was appropriate in American politics.<\/p>\n
