There is a \u201ccultural war\u201d within Catholic America as several factions battle over a single question: What is \u201cCatholic identity\u201d and who has it?<\/p>\n

Bishops rail at universities for not promoting Catholic identity through their choice of a graduation day speaker, the head of the Catholic League considers the National Catholic Reporter a sponsor of \u201cdissident voices\u201d and calls laity seeking reform \u201crogues\u201d and \u201crebels.\u201d Other Catholics denounce cardinals they disagree with and say that Catholics who support Ayn Rand endorse \u201cheresy.\u201d<\/p>\n

I call this a \u201ccultural war\u201d because the conflict is among believers; this dispute is about the kind of faith and the degree of belief within today\u2019s American Catholic culture.<\/p>\n
