Democratic Texas state Rep. James Talarico turned to two familiar Bible stories during his election night victory speech, comparing his historic U.S. Senate win to David defeating Goliath and invoking Jesus overturning the tables in the Temple.<\/p>\n

The 37-year-old Presbyterian seminarian defeated Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Tuesday, becoming the first Democrat to win a U.S. Senate seat in Texas since 1988.<\/p>\n

Speaking to cheering supporters in Austin, Talarico framed his victory as a triumph of ordinary Texans over wealthy political interests and powerful opponents.<\/p>\n

“I’m reminded of that story from Scripture of a shepherd boy who goes up against a giant,” Talarico began, referencing the Old Testament account of David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17.<\/p>\n

He compared the biblical battle to his campaign against Paxton, which faced substantial financial opposition, including spending by billionaire Elon Musk.<\/p>\n

“David wasn’t as big or as strong as Goliath. He didn’t have as many weapons, but he had hope. He had faith, and he had a slingshot,” Talarico told the crowd.<\/p>\n

He then credited his supporters for helping him overcome those challenges.<\/p>\n

“You were my slingshot. The people of Texas were my slingshot. And tonight, and tonight, we defeated Goliath,” he declared.<\/p>\n

Talarico, who has frequently discussed his Christian faith throughout his political career, made religious language central to his Senate campaign. He promoted what he called a “politics of love,” emphasizing unity, compassion and economic fairness.<\/p>\n

His victory marked a significant political shift in Texas, where Republicans had dominated statewide elections for more than three decades.<\/p>\n

Talarico received approximately 55% of the vote, compared with 43% for Paxton, according to election results reported Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Paxton, a three-term attorney general and ally of President Donald Trump, campaigned on conservative priorities. He also faced questions about past controversies, including his 2023 impeachment by the Texas House on corruption-related allegations. The Texas Senate subsequently acquitted him.<\/p>\n

But Talarico’s most striking biblical comparison came near the conclusion of his victory speech, when he referenced Jesus cleansing the Temple, an account recorded in the Gospels.<\/p>\n

“Two thousand years ago, when the people at the top hurt His neighbors, that barefoot rabbi didn’t stay in a room and pray,” Talarico said.<\/p>\n

“He walked into the seat of power, and He flipped over the tables of injustice.”<\/p>\n

The Democrat then connected the biblical account to his upcoming role in Washington.<\/p>\n

“As this movement heads to the seat of power, as we head to the United States Senate, we know what this moment requires of us, Texas. It’s time to start flipping tables,” he declared.<\/p>\n

In the biblical account, Jesus drove merchants and money changers from the Temple, condemning the misuse of a place intended for worship.<\/p>\n

Talarico’s use of the passage reflected his broader campaign message that political institutions should serve ordinary people rather than powerful interests.<\/p>\n

His remarks also highlighted the growing visibility of religious language in American political debates, where candidates across party lines frequently draw on Scripture to explain their values and priorities.<\/p>\n
