Vice President JD Vance says one of Satan’s greatest deceptions is convincing Christians that their faith belongs in church while politics belongs somewhere else.<\/p>\n

Speaking with Bishop Robert Barron on a recent episode of Barron’s podcast, Vance argued that followers of Christ should resist the idea that Jesus only speaks into certain parts of life. Instead, he said, Christian faith should shape every area of a believer’s decisions\u2014including public policy, economics, and politics.<\/p>\n

The conversation, recorded at the vice president’s residence, coincides with the release of Vance’s new memoir, Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith<\/em>, which recounts his 2019 conversion to Catholicism.<\/p>\n

During the discussion<\/a>, Barron and Vance explored Catholic social teaching, the legacy of the late Pope Francis, and the role Christians should play in public life.<\/p>\n

Vance praised Pope Francis for challenging people to think more deeply, even when his comments sparked controversy.<\/p>\n

“I always kind of liked that Pope Francis would just throw these bombs out there in the media because it would force a conversation,” Vance said. “It forced a dialogue, and he was kind of a genius at that.”<\/p>\n

When Barron rejected claims from some critics that Francis’ teachings were Marxist, Vance suggested those accusations reflected spiritual deception.<\/p>\n

“The devil [is] being a deceiver,” he said. “One way to try to turn people’s minds off of very traditional and I think ultimately true Christian teaching is to name it as something else.”<\/p>\n

Vance defended Francis’ emphasis on balancing economic growth with care for those in need, saying those principles are rooted in historic Christian teaching rather than political ideology.<\/p>\n

The vice president also stressed that Jesus’ authority extends far beyond personal morality.<\/p>\n

“Jesus really cares about how you treat your wife, and He really cares about how you treat your kids, but He also cares about everything else too,” Vance said after Barron described Christ as “the Lord of your life.”<\/p>\n

Reflecting on his own upbringing, Vance said many Christians were comfortable speaking about a handful of social issues while avoiding broader questions of economics and government.<\/p>\n

He believes that approach falls short of biblical discipleship.<\/p>\n

“You can’t just confine your faith to these narrow little slices of society or of culture or of your own life,” he said. “It’s got to be true for the whole thing.”<\/p>\n

Barron echoed that sentiment, citing C.S. Lewis’ illustration of people inviting Jesus into only part of their lives.<\/p>\n

Instead of welcoming Christ into the “front parlor” for an hour each week, Barron said, believers should recognize Him as Lord over every room of the house\u2014including “our economic and political lives.”<\/p>\n

Vance also challenged what he sees as America’s growing tendency to idolize economic success. He warned that measuring a nation’s health solely by financial growth can lead to policies that overlook human dignity.<\/p>\n

“We have become so obsessed with the economic measurements that that’s how we judge ourselves,” he said, calling the mindset “a deeply anti-Christian idea.”<\/p>\n

Pointing to issues such as pressure on new mothers to return to work immediately after childbirth and arguments linking abortion access to workforce participation, Vance argued that economic priorities should never outweigh the value of human life and family.<\/p>\n

“The economy exists to serve the human person,” he said. “We don’t order our society so that we have a line on a chart go up.”<\/p>\n

For Vance, the central message is clear: if Jesus is truly Lord, then His teachings should shape not only private faith but every aspect of how Christians live, work, and engage the world around them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
