A group of organizers has passed out Bibles to students at a Texas school after a video went viral of an event in February where students were given hijabs, Qurans, and pamphlets about Sharia law. A table was set up on school grounds by the group Why Islam? outside Wylie East High School where four women handed out the materials to students for World Hijab Day. Marco Hunter-Lopez, the president of the school’s Republican Student Club, took a video of the event and posted it to social media, where it went viral after being shared by Denton County Republican Party Chair Melinda Preston.<\/p>\n

Tension arose at a school board meeting two weeks later, with outraged parents and citizens addressing how the group was able to pass out fliers without prior permission. According to a local news station, the group checked into the front office of the school, but a staff member did not verify guest approval for the group. That staff member was initially put on leave but has since returned to work according to reports. Mustafaa Carroll, interim executive director of the Texas Council on American-Islamic Relations acknowledged the group did not receive the proper permission but claimed the event was being \u201cmisinterpreted.\u201d \u201cI think that it’s easy to be misinterpreted as something else, especially in the climate that we’re in, people think that the Muslims are trying to take over and they’re going to bring Sharia law,\u201d he said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Although the school has denied prior knowledge of the event, Hunter-Lopez claims that the school\u2019s principal, Tiffany Doolan, was present at the booth and giving her consent. \u201cThe principal was there that day looking on, and we actually have photos of her from two previous years wearing the hijab and promoting Islamic events,\u201d he told Fox News Digital<\/em><\/a>. \u201cSo, this is not an isolated incident. So even if policies were broken, the principal looked on and did nothing about it, so we know she was just A-OK with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the controversy, local\u00a0Dallas-Fort Worth<\/a>\u00a0radio host Chris Krok who had reported on the event, decided to do his own fundraiser to hand out Bibles at the school. In partnership with Hunter-Lopez, Krok hosted an event outside school grounds where Bibles were handed out on May 19. Prior to the Bible handout, Hunter-Lopez was invited to speak at a Congressional hearing by Texas Republican Representative Chip Roy. The hearing was called \u201cSharia-Free America,\u201d and Hunter-Lopez made the argument that Sharia law is incompatible with the US Constitution. He also spoke about threats he\u2019d received after he shared a video of the event. \u201cI had people saying that they were going to be at my house waiting for me to get home and they were going to shoot me. I had people telling me to kill myself. A lot of different things. But I know nobody can proclaim anything over me because I wake up every morning with victory with Christ,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He also warned about events like what occurred at his high school. \u201cHanding materials that present Sharia favorably to minors during the school day \u2014 without parental approval \u2014 risks normalizing ideas that undermine the very principles our public schools are supposed to uphold,” he said. “This is not neutral education; it is ideological promotion under the guise of\u00a0diversity and inclusion.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
