A recent student referendum at Ohio University is drawing national attention after an overwhelming 86% of participating students voted in favor of a measure calling for the school to divest from Israel-related investments\u2014despite state law prohibiting<\/a> such action.<\/p>\n

The referendum followed a unanimous vote<\/a> by the university’s Student Senate in support of Senate Bill 2526-11, which urged the institution to divest from companies and bonds tied to Israel and increase transparency around its financial holdings. The proposal was heavily promoted by campus groups, including the university’s Students for Justice in Palestine chapter, which helped draft the bill and hosted an “Educational Forum” ahead of the vote.<\/p>\n

“This issue is not exclusive to Students for Justice in Palestine,” SJP board member Henry Turner said prior<\/a> to the referendum. “There are many, many community and student organizations that are passionate about this issue and want to end the university’s complicity in acts of genocide and apartheid.”<\/p>\n

Several student organizations endorsed the measure, including Amnesty International OU, OU Ohio Student Association, and Southeast Ohio Jewish Voice for Peace, among others. After the vote, activists celebrated the outcome<\/a> but emphasized that their efforts would continue, urging students to “keep pressure on the university” and “stay transparent.”<\/p>\n

However, university officials were quick to clarify that the referendum cannot be implemented. Ohio law explicitly prohibits public institutions from divesting from Israel in a discriminatory manner. Section 9.76 of the Ohio Revised Code states that state agencies\u2014including public universities\u2014may not engage in actions that limit commercial relations with Israel.<\/p>\n

“While Ohio University values input from Student Senate and the student body it serves, it is important to note that the University will neither consider, nor act upon, any resolution or referendum that proposes illegal actions or could expose the University to civil liability,” said OU Senior Director of Communications Dan Pittman.<\/p>\n

He further explained that “Ohio law prohibits public universities from ‘engaging in refusals to deal\u2026 intended to limit commercial relations'” with Israel, making divestment efforts legally untenable.<\/p>\n

Still, some student leaders are exploring alternative approaches. Student Senate governmental affairs commissioner Donald Thiesen suggested the university could choose not to renew certain investments tied to Israel in the future, though it remains unclear how that would align with existing law.<\/p>\n

The situation has also raised broader concerns about campus climate. Alums for Campus Fairness issued a statement saying the university’s response affirms that “student government actions cannot override state law or institutional responsibility,” while also warning that movements tied to boycotts of Israel can contribute to division and hostility, particularly for Jewish students.<\/p>\n

For Christians observing the situation, the debate highlights the importance of seeking truth, promoting peace, and engaging complex global issues with discernment and compassion.
