What I did to Cindy decades ago was wrong. There is no other word for it, and there is no excuse for it,” Morris said in the statement shared through his attorney. “I am deeply sorry.”

He added that he had carried the weight of his actions for years but expressed gratitude that the Clemishire family brought the truth into the open. “It is only in the light that things can truly be addressed and healed,” he said, again asking “publicly, and sincerely, for the forgiveness of Cindy and her entire family.”

Clemishire, now 55, responded with a statement of her own—one that acknowledged forgiveness but also made clear the lasting impact of the abuse.

“I forgave Robert Morris many years ago, and forgiveness is something I continue to walk out—sometimes daily, as needed,” she said. “Forgiveness, however, does not erase the truth of what happened or the lifelong impact it has had on me.”

Her words struck a careful balance between grace and truth, something many in the Christian community may recognize as deeply biblical yet profoundly difficult in practice.

Clemishire also expressed disappointment that Morris did not offer this public apology earlier, specifically when he pleaded guilty in court last October. “That moment mattered,” she said, adding that while his recent words are “what any victim would hope to hear,” she cannot be certain whether they reflect genuine remorse.

“What I do know is this: what happened to me on December 25, 1982, when I was 12 years old, was not a relationship—it was a crime,” she said. “And it changed the course of my life forever.”

Morris was indicted in March 2025 on five counts related to lewd or indecent acts with a child. According to court records, the abuse began on Christmas Day in 1982 and continued for more than four years while Morris was serving as a traveling evangelist. He later pleaded guilty, which his attorney said was an effort to accept responsibility both spiritually and legally.

As part of his sentence, Morris was also ordered to pay $270,000 in restitution. However, legal battles are not over. Clemishire has filed a defamation lawsuit seeking more than $1 million in damages, alleging that Morris and Gateway Church leaders mischaracterized the abuse as a consensual relationship when it became public in 2024.

“For decades, a false narrative was allowed to exist—one that minimized the truth and helped build a platform and following, while my life was left in pieces,” Clemishire said. “That reality cannot be overlooked.”

Despite the pain, she emphasized that accountability matters—not just for her, but for others. “My hope moving forward is that this case helps create space for other survivors to be heard, believed and protected—and that the truth is never again rewritten at the expense of a victim’s life.”

In his statement, Morris also apologized to the broader Christian community, acknowledging the ripple effects of his actions.

“I am sorry for the pain, the confusion and the damage that has come upon so many believers because of my actions,” he said. “That is a weight I carry, and it is right that I carry it.”

He described his time in jail as a turning point, calling it “a moment of true reckoning in the eyes of the law, not just in my own heart or before God.” He said the experience opened his eyes in ways he had not fully understood before.

Morris also expressed gratitude to jail staff for their treatment of inmates and thanked his wife, Debbie, and others who supported him during the difficult season.

Looking ahead, he said he does not plan a public return but instead hopes to live quietly and with integrity. “I intend to live quietly and with integrity, and to be the kind of husband, father, grandfather, and man who reflects that mercy in how he treats others,” he said.

He pointed to Galatians as a guiding scripture during his time in jail, quoting the apostle Paul: “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.”

“The harvest from seeds I sowed long ago in sin was real, and it was just,” Morris said. “But I believe equally in what follows—that when we turn, and when we sow differently, a different harvest is possible.”

Just hours after walking out of an Oklahoma jail, Gateway Church founder Robert Morris issued a public statement reflecting on his six-month sentence for sexually abusing Cindy Clemishire decades ago—and directly asked for her forgiveness.
