Bush tenure. Then it was called the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives in the White House with the intention of partnering the federal government with faith-based groups. His intention was to keep the office non-partisan, selecting two Democrats to direct the office. The office wasn’t allowed to discriminate against whom it served, with President Obama focusing on making the office more about interfaith cooperation after his inauguration.

In 2019, President Trump tapped longtime spiritual adviser Paula White-Cain to what he called the Faith and Opportunity Initiative. President Biden utilized the office for working with multifaith groups during the COVID-19 pandemic by setting up vaccine clinics at houses of worship. After returning to the presidency in 2025, President Trump tapped White-Cain again as the senior advisor of the now-named White House Faith Office, with Jennifer Korn as the faith director.

While previous administrations have been careful to refrain from an overtly partisan look for the Faith Office, Trump’s administration has angered some separation of church and state advocates as well as progressive faith leaders. Doug Pagitt, executive director Vote Common Good, a progressive Christian organization, reportedly told Axios that the Faith Office has refused to meet with him regarding a petition against ICE. Other faith leaders have accused the office of only allowing access for conservative Christians. Interfaith Alliance president and CEO Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush accused Trump of using the office to stroke his ego. “Trump uses God as this kind of divine personal cheerleader who is so proud of him,” he said.

Korn, however, has lauded the Faith Office’s achievements. “The critical mission of the White House Faith Office is to provide a voice of advocacy for our faith community by using the power of government to shape policy, impact culture, and protect faith. The good news is faith is rising in America! People are increasingly going back to worship services, Bible sales are up, youth are turning to faith in record numbers, and the federal government is on your side again,” she wrote on X. She claimed the Trump administration was bringing faith back to everyday Americans. “The faith community feels free to practice their religion under the Trump Administration and the policies we implemented directly impact our faith and walk with God.”

The White House Faith Office has undergone numerous changes since its inception during former President George W.
