Now, as he campaigns for a U.S. Senate seat, he is standing firmly by those remarks.

“While it’s maybe provocative politically, I don’t think it’s controversial theologically. Most Christians believe that God is beyond gender,” Talarico said in the interview.

He went on to cite Scripture to support his position, quoting the Apostle Paul: “In Christ, there is neither male nor female.” Talarico added, “If you have a problem with what I said, don’t take it up with me, take it up with the Apostle Paul.”

The comments have stirred debate, particularly among Christians who hold to a traditional understanding of God as revealed in the Bible. While many theologians agree that God, as Spirit, is not confined by human limitations, Scripture consistently uses masculine language to refer to God and reveals Him as Father, a point that has long been central to Christian doctrine.

Talarico’s remarks come as he ramps up his Senate campaign following a primary victory over Rep. Jasmine Crockett. At 36, he aims to become the first Democrat in nearly four decades to win a U.S. Senate seat in Texas. He will face the winner of an upcoming Republican runoff between longtime Sen. John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

During the same podcast interview, Talarico also aimed at both Republican candidates. “Ken Paxton was impeached for using his public office to enrich his donors,” he claimed. “And that’s exactly what John Cornyn does at the biggest scale.” He added that “neither John Cornyn nor Ken Paxton deserves the honor of representing this great state.”

Beyond theological debates, Talarico outlined policy positions, including his support for abolishing the Senate filibuster. “I think we should abolish the filibuster so that we can actually govern in this country,” he said, arguing that voters want to see tangible results from elected officials.

He also addressed how he plans to connect with voters across Texas, including Black communities, emphasizing the importance of earning trust. “I’m going to be doing the work to earn the trust and the respect and the support of every Black Texan,” he said, pointing to Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock as a model. “He knows how to flip a red state,” Talarico added, saying Texas Democrats hope to “follow the same playbook.”

As the race heats up, Talarico’s theological comments are likely to remain part of the conversation, highlighting the ongoing intersection of faith, politics, and cultural debates in America today.

Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico is drawing renewed attention—and controversy—after doubling down on past remarks describing God as “beyond gender,” a statement he now says was both intentional and rooted in theology.
