Taylor: Miracles in America / YouTube

Federal prosecutors have charged a third leader in what authorities describe as a disturbing forced labor operation tied to a self-proclaimed religious ministry — a case that is drawing renewed concern about spiritual abuse carried out under the guise of faith.

A federal grand jury in Michigan has indicted 53-year-old Kathleen Klein, also known within the organization as “Prophetess,” accusing her of helping lead the Kingdom of God Global Church in an alleged scheme that exploited members to raise millions of dollars through unpaid labor. The church, formerly known as Joshua Media Ministries International, operated call centers across several states, including Michigan, Missouri, Florida and Texas.

According to the Justice Department, Klein worked alongside co-defendants David Taylor and Michelle Brannon in running the multi-state operation, where victims were allegedly forced to work long hours without pay while soliciting donations. Prosecutors say workers faced relentless pressure to meet fundraising quotas — and severe punishment if they failed to do so.

Court documents allege that those who resisted or fell short were subjected to public humiliation, sleep deprivation, physical abuse and the withholding of food and shelter. Some were reportedly compelled to participate in forced “repentance” rituals and threatened with what leaders described as divine punishment, including sickness, accidents, death or eternal damnation.

The superseding indictment states that, since 2014, the organization has collected roughly $50 million in donations, funds prosecutors say were used by leaders for personal enrichment, including real estate purchases, vehicles, airline travel, and luxury goods. The updated charges also include allegations that Taylor solicited sexually explicit images and videos from female workers under his authority.

Klein now faces a charge of conspiracy to commit forced labor, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison if convicted. Taylor and Brannon were first indicted in July 2025 on multiple counts, including forced labor and money laundering conspiracy, and also face potential decades-long sentences.

Justice Department officials emphasized that the case represents not only financial wrongdoing but profound human exploitation. “This case reflects the gravity of forced labor schemes that strip victims of their basic human rights and subject them to physical and brutal psychological abuse,” said Assistant Attorney General Andrew Tysen Duva. “Combating human trafficking is a top priority for the Department of Justice. We will relentlessly pursue those who facilitate and profit from forced labor and fight to obtain justice for survivors.”

For many believers, the allegations are particularly painful because they involve spiritual authority being used to control and harm. Christian leaders and anti-trafficking advocates have increasingly warned that manipulative groups sometimes cloak coercion in religious language, exploiting trust and devotion to maintain power over followers.

While the charges remain allegations until proven in court, the case has sparked reflection across faith communities about the importance of accountability, transparency and safeguarding against abuse in religious settings. Advocates say it also underscores the need for vigilance when leaders claim unquestioned spiritual authority or demand extreme obedience.

As the legal process unfolds, prosecutors say their focus remains on those who were allegedly coerced and harmed. For survivors of spiritual and labor exploitation, the indictment represents a step toward recognition — and, authorities hope, eventual justice.

Federal prosecutors have charged a third leader in what authorities describe as a disturbing forced labor operation tied to a self-proclaimed religious ministry — a case that is drawing renewed concern about spiritual abuse carried out under the guise of faith.
