So is our outrage,” Cupich said, calling for “nothing less than an unequivocal apology—to the nation and to the persons demeaned.” Weisenburger echoed that call, writing that he joins “the many calling for a public apology with full acceptance of responsibility,” while rejecting White House claims that the public response amounted to “fake outrage.”

The offensive clip appeared at the end of a longer video reposted by Trump on his Truth Social account shortly before midnight on Feb. 5. The video repeated long-debunked claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen and concluded with an animated scene portraying apes with the Obamas’ faces superimposed. The post remained online for roughly 12 hours before being removed, even as criticism mounted from across the political spectrum.

Initially, the White House defended the post. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described the video as a meme portraying Trump as “the King of the Jungle,” urging critics to “stop the fake outrage.” By Friday, however, the administration told news outlets that a staffer had “erroneously made the post.” Trump himself said he did not see the offensive imagery and insisted he would not apologize, saying, “I didn’t make a mistake.”

For the Catholic leaders speaking out, the issue extends far beyond a single post. In his statement, Cupich traced the long and painful history of portraying groups as animals to justify exploitation, exclusion, and violence. Such imagery, he said, helped numb the nation’s conscience to injustice—from poverty wages to lynching and the turning away of refugees. “We tell ourselves that those days belong in the past,” he said, “but a few days ago we saw that such blatant racism is not merely a practice of the past.”

Weisenburger likewise framed the moment as a call to moral reflection. “It is very disturbing that anyone, much less the President of the United States or his staff members, should see racist memes as humorous or appropriate expressions of political discourse,” he wrote, adding that they “must be condemned in the strongest terms.”

Both leaders grounded their appeals in core Christian teaching. “As Catholics, we believe that every person is made in the image and likeness of God,” Weisenburger wrote. “This sacred truth compels us to treat every human being with dignity, respect, and love.” Beyond an apology, he urged Americans to examine their consciences and recommit to resisting the ongoing evil of racism, “as truly we are called to be one human family.”

As of publication, the White House had not responded to questions about whether the president was aware of the bishops’ statements or whether he intends to reconsider his refusal to apologize.

Two senior Catholic leaders in the United States are calling on President Donald Trump to issue a public apology after he reposted a social media video that included a racist trope depicting former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama as apes—imagery long associated with dehumanizing Black Americans.
