A UK nurse who was suspended from her job after misgendering a pedophile has been reinstated. Jennifer Melle, a nurse at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, was called in to help treat a patient who was reportedly in prison for pedophilic offenses in May 2024. The patient, a man who identified as a woman, was combative and irritated. When Melle referred to the patient as \u201cMr.\u201d and \u201che,\u201d he demanded she refer to him by his female pronouns. Melle, who is a Christian, refused to do so based on her religious beliefs but offered to refer to the patient by his name. The patient, however, became angrier and began to verbally abuse Melle, including calling her the N- word while trying to physically assault her.<\/p>\n

Staff were able to eventually calm the patient down and Melle finished her shift. The next day, however, she found out that the patient had filed a complaint against her for \u201cmisgendering\u201d him. Authorities at the hospital threatened disciplinary action. \u201cAnd they said, if you don’t provide a statement within 24 hours, you’re going to be suspended,\u201d Melle told Fox News Digital<\/em>.<\/a> Melle was then transferred from her department and given her first written warning in October 2024. After Melle\u2019s case began to receive media attention, she was suspended and accused of a \u201cdata breach\u201d by the Trust.<\/p>\n

After its investigation was complete, the hospital cleared Melle of any breach of private information on the patient. \u201cFollowing an investigation into a breach of patient confidentiality, we are pleased that a member of staff who was previously suspended on full pay is being reinstated to clinical duties,\u201d a spokesperson told Fox News Digital<\/em>, adding that “Racial abuse of our staff will never be tolerated, and we are sorry that she had this experience.” Melle\u2019s legal battle, however, is far from over as she pursues an Employment Tribunal\u00a0against the Trust for claims of harassment, victimization, and discrimination.<\/p>\n

Melle\u2019s hearing is scheduled for April 2026. In the meantime, she is praising God for being reinstated. \u201cI am thankful, relieved, and hopeful for what comes next,\u201d she said. \u201cI give glory to God for His faithfulness throughout this entire ordeal.\u201d In a statement, she highlighted the importance of protecting others from a similar experience. \u201cI am thankful that this chapter is closing, but I remain determined that the lessons of my case, and the cases before mine, must be learned,\u201d she wrote. \u201cThe NHS must protect its staff, uphold fairness, and ensure that no nurse is ever again placed in an impossible position for simply doing their job with integrity.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
