The Trump administration has announced a dramatic cut to the number of refugees the United States will resettle in 2026 \u2014 a move Christian aid organizations are calling “heartbreaking” and “shameful,” saying it abandons persecuted believers and families fleeing danger worldwide.<\/p>\n

According to a notice<\/a> in the Federal Register<\/em>, the White House will cap the refugee resettlement ceiling at 7,500 people for fiscal year 2026 \u2014 the lowest in modern U.S. history. The administration said the reduced quota will “primarily be allocated among Afrikaners from South Africa,” under a new executive order focusing on “victims of illegal or unjust discrimination in their respective homelands.”<\/p>\n

The new figure represents a staggering drop from the 125,000 ceiling set by President Biden, and is even below the 18,000 limit established during Trump’s previous term.<\/p>\n

Faith Leaders: “We’re Turning Our Backs on the Vulnerable”<\/h3>\n

Myal Greene, president and CEO of World Relief, the humanitarian arm of the National Association of Evangelicals, called<\/a> the decision “deeply troubling.”<\/p>\n

“This is heartbreaking,” Greene said. “At a time when there are more refugees globally than ever in recorded history, when Christians and others face horrific persecution on account of their faith, the U.S. will do less than ever to offer refuge.”<\/p>\n

Greene and other Christian leaders had earlier urged the administration to set a minimum refugee ceiling of 50,000, a figure they described as both compassionate and realistic.<\/p>\n

“By focusing narrowly on Afrikaners,” Greene continued, “the administration is ignoring individuals who are at much greater risk \u2014 including persecuted Christians from Nigeria, Iran, and Burma, as well as Ukrainians fleeing Russia’s brutal war.”<\/p>\n

He warned that advocates for democracy and human rights “living under totalitarian regimes will be effectively abandoned.”<\/p>\n

Churches Denounce ‘Unworthy’ Shift in U.S. Policy<\/h3>\n

Church World Service (CWS), a coalition representing dozens of denominations, also issued a joint statement condemning the new refugee limit.<\/p>\n

“The administration turns its back on families in desperate need,” the statement read. “Worse still, the White House has made clear that destroying this highly successful, life-saving program isn’t enough \u2014 it now seeks to transform that program into something unrecognizable and unworthy of its proud history.”<\/p>\n

Faith leaders within CWS said prioritizing Afrikaners from South Africa over refugees already vetted and approved for U.S. entry was a betrayal of Christian compassion and America’s moral leadership.<\/p>\n

“By drastically reducing the number of refugees to be admitted in the coming year, and by prioritizing Afrikaners for nearly all those slots, the White House is shamefully abandoning tens of thousands of bona fide refugees who have already been approved for resettlement,” the statement added.<\/p>\n

Episcopal Church Cuts Ties Over Policy<\/h3>\n

The Episcopal Church announced in May that it would withdraw from its decades-long refugee resettlement partnership with the U.S. government, citing concerns over racial favoritism in refugee selection.<\/p>\n

“I am saddened and ashamed that many of the refugees who are being denied entrance to the United States are brave people who worked alongside our military in Iraq and Afghanistan and now face danger at home because of their service to our country,” wrote<\/a> Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe in a public letter.<\/p>\n

Rowe stated that the denomination would terminate all federally funded refugee programs by the end of the fiscal year.<\/p>\n

Faith and Compassion Tested<\/h3>\n

Critics argue the administration’s policy marks a stark reversal of the nation’s long-standing commitment to sheltering the persecuted \u2014 a principle rooted in Christian compassion and enshrined in U.S. refugee law since the 1980s.<\/p>\n

“As Christians, we are commanded to welcome the stranger,” Greene said. “This decision does the opposite \u2014 it closes the door on those crying out for mercy.”<\/p>\n
