Revelations that Gateway Church founder Robert Morris molested a 12-year-old girl in the 1980s shook Christian circles last summer. Now, after more than a year of legal proceedings, Morris has pleaded guilty<\/a> to five felony counts of lewd or indecent acts with a child. As part of a plea agreement, he received a 10-year suspended sentence, six months in jail, sex offender registration, and must pay $270,000 in restitution.<\/p>\n

His victim, Cindy Clemishire, was in the courtroom last week when Morris entered his plea. She read a powerful statement directly to him, describing the deep wounds his actions left on her life.<\/p>\n

“Abuse is Love”<\/h3>\n

“In my victim statement, I told Robert that, not only did he steal my innocence and basically murdered the woman I was supposed to grow into \u2026 he basically built this twisted framework on a foundation that my parents had built with me that was very solid,” Clemishire said. “He began building a framework that was very twisted on what love is, and it \u2026 more taught me that abuse is love.”<\/p>\n

She explained how this warped view of love complicated her relationships and her understanding of how men should treat her. “Robert did not do anything but teach me that my body was not sacred,” she said. “And that had a major impact on my adult life.”<\/p>\n

An Emotional Day in Court<\/h3>\n

The courtroom experience was heartbreaking but also freeing for Clemishire. Sitting beside her father, she said she felt his pain as well as his love. “It was emotional to be sitting next to my dad and holding his hand, knowing the immense feelings that were going through him,” she shared.<\/p>\n

Although she was able to face Morris directly, she said he never looked up. “He was looking directly down at the table,” she recalled. “I never felt a sense of remorse.”<\/p>\n

Still, she found strength in speaking the truth before the court and the world. “It was empowering to finally be heard by the world and the law.”<\/p>\n

Pain, Betrayal, and Faith<\/h3>\n

For years, Clemishire said she warned others about her story, only to be ignored by leaders in the church world. “They say he’s been restored; they don’t ask about my restoration, they don’t pursue helping me find restoration or my family,” she said.<\/p>\n

That betrayal, she admitted, caused deep frustration and damaged her trust in organized religion. But through it all, she never abandoned her faith in Jesus.<\/p>\n

“I was taught to believe the Word of God. I was taught to have a personal relationship with Jesus \u2014 to pray, and that’s what I’ve done my whole adult life, even in very difficult times,” she said.<\/p>\n

Moving Forward With Forgiveness<\/h3>\n

Clemishire said the plea deal was not about what was best for Morris or for outside observers, but what would allow her to move forward. “This is what’s best for me,” she explained.<\/p>\n

She also spoke about the ongoing journey of forgiveness. “Again, 70 times seven,” she said, referencing Jesus’ teaching. “Forgiveness is not for him. It is for me.”<\/p>\n

As Morris was led away in handcuffs, Clemishire described a moment of release. “I felt like I had been wearing a costume my entire adult life \u2026 and that costume came off of me and stayed on the bench I was sitting on in that courtroom. I walked out as the woman that God actually created me to be.”<\/p>\n
