A Sunday morning worship service in suburban Grand Blanc, Michigan, turned into a scene of chaos and grief when a gunman drove his vehicle into a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building before opening fire on congregants. Authorities confirmed that four people were killed and at least eight others were wounded in the attack.<\/p>\n

Police Chief William Renye said the 40-year-old suspect from Burton, Michigan, rammed through the church’s front doors before unleashing gunfire on the gathered congregation.<\/p>\n

“He then exited his vehicle, firing several rounds at individuals within the church,” Renye said during a press conference. “Our officers engaged the suspect, and he was killed at the scene.”<\/p>\n

Parishioners scrambled for cover as police and emergency crews rushed to the site, roughly 60 miles north of Detroit. Ten people in total were struck by gunfire, including the one fatality. Several remain hospitalized in critical condition.<\/p>\n

Investigators believe the attacker also ignited a fire inside the building, which quickly spread and filled the sanctuary with smoke. The blaze forced emergency crews to pull back until it was safe to re-enter, raising fears that the number of victims could rise.<\/p>\n

“We do believe that we will find additional victims once we have that scene secure,” Renye warned.<\/p>\n

The FBI has assigned more than 100 agents to assist with interviews, digital evidence, and searches of the suspect’s home and electronic devices. Authorities have now identified the gunman as 40-year-old Iraq War Veteran Thomas Jacob Sanford. Witnesses reported that he appeared to use a rifle.<\/p>\n

Grand Blanc Township Supervisor Scott Bennett called the attack “heartbreaking.”<\/p>\n

“This kind of violence doesn’t happen in our community, and we are heartbroken that it came here,” Bennett said. “We’re going to do everything we can to support the families, the victims and our community getting through this situation.”<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump responded<\/a> on Truth Social, saying he had been briefed and urged the nation to pray.<\/p>\n

“This appears to be yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States of America,” the president wrote. “In the meantime, PRAY for the victims and their families. THIS EPIDEMIC OF VIOLENCE IN OUR COUNTRY MUST END, IMMEDIATELY!”<\/p>\n

The assault came less than 24 hours after the death<\/a> of LDS Church president Russell M. Nelson, who passed away Saturday at his Utah home at the age of 101. For many Latter-day Saints, the weekend’s events have created a painful mix of grief and shock.<\/p>\n

As investigators continue to search for answers, churches across Michigan and beyond are being urged to pray for the victims, their families, and the Grand Blanc community. For Christians of every denomination, this tragedy is another reminder of the vulnerability of places of worship\u2014and of the hope found in prayer and unity during times of suffering.<\/p>\n
