CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio (RNS) The man suspected of bombing a synagogue in Santa Monica, Calif., on April 7 was arrested in Cleveland Heights Monday (April 11).<\/p>\n
Ron Hirsch, 60, was arrested by the Cleveland Heights Police Department about 7 p.m. Monday after they received a call from someone who came in contact with Hirsch, according to Laura Eimiller, spokeswoman for the FBI’s Los Angeles office.<\/p>\n
“We believe that the man in custody is Mr. Hirsch,” Eimiller said. “We will continue our investigation to confirm that.”<\/p>\n
Hirsch, also known as J. Fisher, was wanted in connection with the bombing of the Chabad House synagogue in Santa Monica. Evidence found around the synagogue was linked to Hirsch, according to a news release from the FBI.<\/p>\n
Officials discovered that Hirsch had purchased a Greyhound ticket to New York the day of the explosion.<\/p>\n
Hirsch, a transient known to spend time at synagogues and other Jewish community centers seeking charity, is wanted on state charges of possession of a destructive device and unrelated local charges, The Associated Press reported.<\/p>\n
The explosion shattered windows and punched a hole in the synagogue, sending chunks of concrete and a heavy pipe crashing into the roof of a nearby house, AP reported.<\/p>\n
