An amendment to rename the Kennedy Center’s opera house<\/a> after Melania Trump took a step forward Tuesday. The House Appropriations Committee voted along party lines to add the amendment to a funding bill for the Interior Department, Environmental Protection Agency and other related federal agencies.<\/p>\n

First ladies serve a ceremonial role as the honorary chair of the Kennedy Center’s board. They typically attend events and assist with activities such as fundraising.<\/p>\n

Republican leaders have not said when they will present the bill to the full House of Representatives for a vote. However, it must be approved by both the Senate and the House to become law.<\/p>\n

Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho), who introduced the amendment, said it was an excellent way to recognize the first lady’s commitment to the arts. Simpson’s effort comes after Donald Trump dismissed all Kennedy Center board members appointed by President Joe Biden. Most of the remaining board members were appointed by Trump during his previous term.<\/p>\n

Trump’s purge, which occurred in February, was controversial as well as unprecedented, as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has traditionally been bipartisan. However, Trump has filled the vacant board seats with his supporters and named himself chairman.<\/p>\n

The president appoints Kennedy Center board members, and they typically serve six-year terms, which are staggered.<\/p>\n

Rep. Cheillie Pingree (D-Maine) called the proposed name change “divisive” and said it is part of Trump’s plan to run the Kennedy Center “with very little oversight” from Congress.<\/p>\n

Pingree, a ranking member of the House Interior and Environment Subcommittee, added: “It’s hard to ignore the red flags here. While the Trump Administration is gunning to eliminate the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities, cancelling arts grants already allocated, and censoring exhibits at the Smithsonian, Republicans are quietly pushing through an exorbitant $256 million allocation for the Kennedy Center \u2013 six times what Congress typically appropriates.”<\/p>\n

She added that Congress must ensure the funds it appropriates benefit artists and audiences.<\/p>\n

The Kennedy Center is already experiencing problems because of Trump’s actions, according to Washington Classical Review<\/em><\/a>, <\/em>an online classical music and news site. The publication said in late May that some Kennedy Center patrons are boycotting all performances at the center or considering a boycott. Some long-time subscribers of the National Symphony Orchestra, Washington National Opera and Fortas Chamber Music Concerts may drop their subscriptions, as well.<\/p>\n

The Review <\/em>noted that “the number of empty seats on the orchestra level seemed like the first solid evidence of a widespread boycott.<\/p>\n

“\u2026.many patrons who had paid for tickets may have simply stayed home. The fear for next season is that even larger numbers of subscribers and single-ticket buyers will stay away, a potentially devastating blow to the Kennedy Center’s solvency,” the Washington Classical Review <\/em>said.<\/p>\n

The publication pointed out that most long-time Washingtonians avoid talking politics in polite conversation. “If you live in this city long enough, you understand that different political parties and personalities, no matter how objectionable to one’s own inclinations, come and go.”<\/p>\n

Bringing politics into artistic endeavors only hurts those endeavors, many believe.<\/p>\n

The Kennedy Center’s opera house has more than 2,300 seats, making it the organization’s second-largest theater.<\/p>\n

“Over the years, the opera house has welcomed dozens of the world’s great dance and opera companies and has hosted some of the most important artistic events of the last quarter century,” the center said.<\/p>\n

The first indication of trouble occurred in March, when Vice President J.D. Vance and his wife Usha attended a National Symphony Orchestra concert there.<\/p>\n

According to the Washington Classical Review,<\/em> the normally dignified audience greeted the Vances “with a sustained and unprecedented chorus of loud booing. After intermission, the Vances wisely decided not to enter the presidential box until after the music had begun, to avoid further heckling.”<\/p>\n

Trump and his wife, accompanied by the Vances, encountered a mixed reaction when they stepped into the presidential box to see Les Mis\u00e9rables <\/em>earlier this year. It was the first time Trump had attended a show at the center.<\/p>\n

However, political changes and a boycott were not the only problems facing the Kennedy Center. According to the Review,<\/em> the center is also losing a significant number of staff members. Richard Grenell, the new Kennedy Center president, fired about 40 staff members earlier this year, and many others have resigned in protest.<\/p>\n

The center has roughly 90 staff members left, and they have voted to unionize over concerns that Trump wants to “dismantle mission-essential departments and reshape our arts programming.”<\/p>\n

Some artists and organizations will continue to perform at the Kennedy Center. However, others, such as acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, will move their Washington performances elsewhere. A production of the hit show Hamilton <\/em>canceled its run at the Kennedy Center after Trump fired Biden-appointed board members.<\/p>\n

In addition to these losses, the Kennedy Center is fearful that Trump’s changes will have a “grave impact on fundraising.” According to the Review, <\/em>the decision to oust chairman David M. Rubenstein — who has donated more than $100 million to the center — has “turned away the considerable number of donors Rubenstein courted successfully during his tenure.”<\/p>\n

The Review <\/em>suggested that donors in the Washington, D.C. area support organizations such as the National Symphony Orchestra directly rather than through the Kennedy Center.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
