A BBC news presenter is receiving praise after correcting an autocue that referred to pregnant women as \u201cpregnant people.\u201d Martine Croxall was delivering a story live<\/a> on the recent heat wave in the UK and warning against heat-related deaths. \u201cLondon School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine has released research which says that nearly 600 heat-related deaths are expected in the U.K.,” reported Croxall. She then read a report about who was at risk for heat-related deaths, saying, \u201cMalcolm Mistry, who was involved in the research, says that the aged, pregnant people\u2026\u201d After stating \u201cpregnant people,\u201d Croxall looked pointedly at the camera and said, \u201cwomen,” before adding, “and those with pre-existing health conditions need to take precautions.\u201d<\/p>\n

The term \u201cpregnant people\u201d instead of \u201cpregnant women\u201d has become more popularized by those who wish to promote more \u201cinclusive\u201d language. The term is often used with the intention of including trans men (biological women who have transitioned to men) and nonbinary people (who still have a biological gender). Other such terms that have been used in the medical field have included saying \u201cchest feeding\u201d instead of \u201cbreastfeeding\u201d or replacing \u201cwell-woman visit\u201d with \u201ccheckup.\u201d<\/p>\n

The clip of Croxall correcting the term to women quickly went viral, with conservatives and women\u2019s advocates praising her. JK Rowling, who has been outspoken against transgender ideology, shared the clip of Croxall<\/a>, writing, \u201cI have a new favourite BBC presenter.\u201d The attention gained Croxall a slew of new followers on social media, which she acknowledged on X<\/a>. \u201cA huge thank you to everyone who has chosen to follow me today for whatever reason,\u201d she wrote along with the viral clip. \u201cIt\u2019s been quite a ride\u2026\u201d Several responded with concern that Croxall\u2019s job might be at risk, with Rowling writing<\/a>, \u201cYou\u2019d better not be in any trouble\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

The BBC, however, has backed Croxall. \u201cMartine is not in any trouble. She has the full backing of the BBC because she got it right,\u201d and insider told The Daily Mail<\/em><\/a>. \u201cShe was stating a fact and correcting a mistake.\u201d According to the BBC, the term \u201cpregnant people\u201d was from a press release from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and had been left in Croxall\u2019s autocue by mistake. When MailOnline asked LSHTM to correct its release, it declined, stating, \u201cLSHTM is committed to academic freedom of speech, and this includes giving our staff the freedom to say either \u2018pregnant people\u2019 or \u2018pregnant women\u2019 depending on what they think is most appropriate in any given situation.\u201d In April the highest UK court ruled that the law recognizes a woman as anyone born biologically female.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
