King Charles is facing criticism for including references to Islam, Judaism, and other faiths in his annual Easter message, delivered on Maundy Thursday \u2014 a gesture some Christians say diluted the central message of the Resurrection.<\/p>\n

In his address, the monarch focused on the enduring human need for “faith, hope and love” while reflecting on the suffering and compassion witnessed worldwide.<\/p>\n

“One of the puzzles of our humanity is how we are capable of both great cruelty and great kindness,” he said. “This paradox of human life runs through the Easter story and in the scenes that daily come before our eyes \u2014 at one moment, terrible images of human suffering and, in another, heroic acts in war-torn countries where humanitarians of every kind risk their own lives to protect the lives of others.”<\/p>\n

The King added that he had recently met many such individuals during a reception at Buckingham Palace and praised their “resilience, courage and compassion.”<\/p>\n

However, he attempted to connect Jesus’ love to the ethical teachings of other religions, which sparked debate.<\/p>\n

“On Maundy Thursday, Jesus knelt and washed the feet of many of those who would abandon Him. His humble action was a token of His love that knew no bounds or boundaries and is central to Christian belief,” Charles said.<\/p>\n

He continued, “The love He showed when He walked the Earth reflected the Jewish ethic of caring for the stranger and those in need, a deep human instinct echoed in Islam and other religious traditions, and in the hearts of all who seek the good of others.”<\/p>\n

Though intended as an inclusive message, many Christians found the comparison inappropriate for the sacred occasion of Easter. The backlash was swift, especially on social media, where some accused the King of downplaying the distinctiveness of the Christian faith.<\/p>\n

“Is this a joke?” one commenter wrote bluntly.<\/p>\n

Another criticized the message’s broad religious tone by drawing a personal analogy: “Is he not the head of the Church of England? When it’s my son’s birthday, I don’t wish my daughter a happy birthday either. Let Easter just be Easter.”<\/p>\n

The criticism stems largely from Charles’ official role as Supreme Governor of the Church of England and his inherited title, “Defender of the Faith.” While the King has long spoken about interfaith understanding and harmony, some Christian observers feel that such gestures risk blurring doctrinal lines \u2014 particularly during foundational Christian celebrations like Easter.<\/p>\n
