His humble action was a token of His love that knew no bounds or boundaries and is central to Christian belief,” Charles said.

He continued, “The love He showed when He walked the Earth reflected the Jewish ethic of caring for the stranger and those in need, a deep human instinct echoed in Islam and other religious traditions, and in the hearts of all who seek the good of others.”

Though intended as an inclusive message, many Christians found the comparison inappropriate for the sacred occasion of Easter. The backlash was swift, especially on social media, where some accused the King of downplaying the distinctiveness of the Christian faith.

“Is this a joke?” one commenter wrote bluntly.

Another criticized the message’s broad religious tone by drawing a personal analogy: “Is he not the head of the Church of England? When it’s my son’s birthday, I don’t wish my daughter a happy birthday either. Let Easter just be Easter.”

The criticism stems largely from Charles’ official role as Supreme Governor of the Church of England and his inherited title, “Defender of the Faith.” While the King has long spoken about interfaith understanding and harmony, some Christian observers feel that such gestures risk blurring doctrinal lines — particularly during foundational Christian celebrations like Easter.

This is not the first time King Charles has faced pushback over his messaging during religious holidays. His 2024 Christmas address, which many expected to focus on the birth of Christ, instead included language that some said appeared to equate all religious paths.

“As the famous Christmas Carol, Once In Royal David’s City reminds us, ‘Our Savior holy’ ‘came down to Earth from Heaven,’ lived among ‘the poor and mean and lowly’ and transformed the lives of those he met, through God’s ‘redeeming love,'” Charles said — but he also emphasized unity across faith traditions in a way that again raised eyebrows.

Supporters of the King argue that his comments reflect the increasingly diverse religious landscape of the United Kingdom and show a desire to lead as a unifying figure in a pluralistic society. But critics say that in doing so, he risks weakening his witness as the ceremonial head of the Christian Church in England.

At a time when Christians in the UK and around the world face rising secularism and increased marginalization, many believers are calling for clarity and boldness — not religious generalization — from their spiritual leaders.

“Easter is about the resurrection of Jesus Christ,” one commenter wrote. “It’s not the time to promote interfaith values. It’s a time to proclaim the Gospel.”

Whether King Charles will respond to the backlash remains to be seen, but for many Christians, the message is clear: Easter should be unmistakably about Jesus.

King Charles is facing criticism for including references to Islam, Judaism, and other faiths in his annual Easter message, delivered on Maundy Thursday — a gesture some Christians say diluted the central message of the Resurrection.
