U.S. Vice President JD Vance, a Catholic convert and prominent figure in the Trump administration, met Saturday with senior Vatican officials in Rome for talks that highlighted growing tensions between the Holy See and the U.S. government on issues such as migration, war, and prison reform.<\/p>\n

The meeting came as Vance spent Easter weekend in Rome with his family, attending Good Friday services at St. Peter’s Basilica and later touring the Sistine Chapel. While it is unclear whether Vance met personally with Pope Francis, he did meet with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, and Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the Vatican’s foreign minister.<\/p>\n

According to a Vatican statement, the discussions were cordial but included “an exchange of opinions on the international situation,” particularly regarding war-torn countries, migrants, refugees, and prisoners. The Holy See acknowledged the U.S. administration’s stated commitment to religious freedom and conscience but emphasized the need for “serene collaboration” between Church and state, especially in addressing humanitarian concerns.<\/p>\n

At the heart of the discussion was the Trump administration’s tough stance on immigration, which has drawn criticism from the Vatican and many U.S. Catholic leaders. Pope Francis has made care for migrants a central theme of his papacy, often clashing with conservative U.S. officials over policies seen as harsh or exclusionary.<\/p>\n

Vance recently accused the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops of resettling “illegal immigrants” to receive federal funding\u2014an assertion that top U.S. cardinals have strongly disputed. The Vatican’s reference to hopes for “serene collaboration” may have been a subtle rebuke to such claims.<\/p>\n

Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, is aligned with a growing Catholic intellectual movement known as “postliberalism.” Advocates of this view often oppose abortion and LGBTQ+ rights and seek to reshape American institutions according to a traditional vision of the common good. Critics, however, warn of its authoritarian tendencies and its divergence from Pope Francis’ social teachings.<\/p>\n

One flashpoint in this debate came earlier this year when Vance cited “ordo amoris,” a medieval Catholic concept describing a hierarchy of love, to justify prioritizing Americans over migrants. In a pastoral letter on Feb. 10, Pope Francis appeared to directly refute this interpretation, writing, “The true ordo amoris that must be promoted is that which we discover by meditating constantly on the parable of the ‘Good Samaritan’ \u2026 a fraternity open to all, without exception.”<\/p>\n

Despite clear disagreements, both sides have made gestures toward respectful engagement. Vance, who once criticized Pope Francis on social media, has recently posted prayers for the pontiff’s recovery from pneumonia. At the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast in February, Vance acknowledged his spiritual journey, calling himself a “baby Catholic” and admitting, “There are things about the faith that I don’t know.”<\/p>\n

Cardinal Parolin, speaking to Italian media on the eve of the meeting, noted the uniqueness of the current U.S. administration. “It is clear that the approach is very different from what we are used to, and especially in the West, from what we have relied on for many years,” he said.<\/p>\n
