As the film adaptation of Broadway\u2019s immensely popular \u201cWicked\u201d continues to rise in the box office<\/a>, New York\u2019s iconic 59th<\/sup> St Bloomingdale\u2019s decided to get into the action by having its Santaland Oz-themed. The theme includes pink trees and lollipops over candy canes and, of course, a yellow brick road. Santa, too, has gotten into the theme, trading in his iconic red outfit for a green and gold one.<\/p>\n

The change to Santa\u2019s look is leaving some shoppers miffed. \u201cJust a heads up if your child is expecting Santa in his traditional red and white suit, Bloomingdale\u2019s is only offering green Santa. We left a bit disappointed without a photo. I just wanted to share in case other people were thinking about taking their kids to see Santa and want a traditional photo,\u201d wrote<\/a> one mother on Facebook. Another mother, Melanie, told The New York Post <\/em>that it was disappointing to see Santa \u201ccommercialized.\u201d \u201cLeave Santa alone. Not everything needs to be changed or challenged,\u201d she said, adding that there was \u201cno reason to have a green Santa except to promote a movie in an already overly commercialized holiday. Green Santa is stupid \u2026 Hard pass.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the complaint, The Daily Mail<\/em><\/a> reported that there are some who believe good ol\u2019 Saint Nick may have been originally featured in green until his famous Coca Cola ad campaigns that began in 1931. Swedish illustrator Haddon Sundblom was hired by Coca Cola to draw up an ad that would help the company sell the soda during the winter season. Sundblom reportedly utilized a Coca Cola salesman as his model and chose to draw him in red and white, Coca Cola\u2019s company colors.<\/p>\n

Bloomingdale\u2019s Santa, Santa Doug, who has worked as Santa since 2019, stated the only complaints he has heard are from parents, not children. \u201cIt\u2019s mostly the adults who ask, \u2018Why aren\u2019t you in red, Santa?\u2019\u201d he said. A Bloomingdale\u2019s representative stated<\/a> the store had not received any negative feedback about the change. The film is also featuring special limited-edition stuffed animals, with some being pink to represent Glinda, the Witch of the North played by Ariana Grande, and green ones to represent Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, as portrayed by Cynthia Erivo.
