The family of Luigi Mangione, the Ivy League graduate\u00a0charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson<\/a>, said they were \u201cdevastated\u201d by his arrest \u2014 as it was revealed the 26-year-old alleged gunman\u00a0spiraled after undergoing \u201ctraumatic\u201d back surgery<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur family is shocked and devastated by Luigi\u2019s arrest,\u201d the family said in a statement shared by his cousin Nino Mangione, a Republican Baltimore County delegate, late Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved. We are devastated by this news,\u201d the Mangione family said.<\/p>\n

The relatives added that they \u201ccannot comment on news reports\u201d regarding the accused killer, who was arrested at a Pennsylvania McDonald\u2019s on Monday morning following a frantic, five-day manhunt.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe only know what we have read in the media,\u201d the family said.<\/p>\n

Luigi Mangione was\u00a0reported to police<\/a>\u00a0by an Altoona McDonald\u2019s employee who recognized the suspected gunman from photos released by the New York Police Department.<\/p>\n

Local cops approached him while he was eating at the restaurant and said he \u201cstarted to shake\u201d when they asked if he had been to New York recently, according to a criminal complaint.<\/p>\n

He provided them with a fake New Jersey ID \u2014 believed to be the same one he used when checking into a Manhattan hostel before the killing \u2014 and was taken into custody.<\/p>\n

Police discovered a ghost gun with a silencer on him and other items that sources said were \u201cconsistent\u201d with what police were seeking, including a\u00a0rambling, handwritten manifesto<\/a>\u00a0that claimed \u201cthese parasites had it coming.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI do apologize for any strife of traumas but it had to be done,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

Luigi Mangione, a University of Pennsylvania grad,\u00a0comes from a well-off real estate family<\/a>\u00a0prominent in their Maryland community.<\/p>\n

He was raised outside Baltimore in Towson and his family owns two sprawling country clubs, a local radio station and several other real estate holdings.<\/p>\n

In the weeks leading up to the shooting, he became estranged from his friends and family, according to law enforcement sources.<\/p>\n

Mangione\u2019s mother reported him missing Nov. 18 \u2014 possibly from a home in San Francisco, where he lived for a time \u2014 and reached out to his peers as they tried to track him down.<\/p>\n
