The question came from an anonymous elder who had recently received training from a parachurch organization serving a nearby college campus ministry that encouraged \u201cgender pronoun hospitality,\u201d or referring to someone who identifies with a different gender by their preferred pronoun. The purpose of such hospitality, according to the elder, was \u201cthat there are times when, for the sake of evangelism, one may decide to call a person by their chosen gender if such an act removes a possible barrier in sharing the gospel.\u201d However, the elder felt that the <a href=\"https:\/\/cbmw.org\/the-nashville-statement\/#articles\">Nashville Statement<\/a>, which affirms only two genders and marriage between one man and one woman, left no \u201cwiggle room\u201d for such \u201cgender pronoun hospitality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Piper responded to the elder\u2019s dilemma by citing five instances when pronoun use must be biblically considered: alternative addresses, misleading slogans, compromised word, evangelism that is forthright, and whether gender pronouns constitute a \u201cserious issue.\u201d According to Piper, in addressing someone directly, generally \u201cyou\u201d will be used without any need to use such pronouns as he, she, they, or the many others that have been offered. Regarding names, while noting it could still be harder to avoid saying a person\u2019s chosen name that matches their gender identity, it was still possible. He also referred to \u201cgender pronoun hospitality\u201d as a \u201cmisleading slogan.\u201d \u201cWe ought to be hospitable, but we ought not to be affirming pronouns that designate a destructive choice and a false view of reality. It is possible to be hospitable and honest,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Piper further pressed that the idea of \u201cgender\u201d itself was a compromise on the biblical reality of the male and female sex as God had intended. He noted that the word \u201cgender\u201d came from radical feminists who wanted to free women from the \u201cbondage\u201d of the female sex. \u201cSex is bondage; gender is freedom \u2014 so it was thought. I think using the word \u2018gender\u2019 where the right word is \u2018sex\u2019 is like using the word \u2018marriage\u2019 for a relationship between two men or two women. It\u2019s not marriage. It is so-called \u2018marriage.\u2019\u201d Piper also took issue with the idea of gender pronoun hospitality as a form of evangelism. \u201cHow much of the gospel\u2019s implications and purifying power should be shared up front in evangelism? Peter stated the gospel like this in 1 Peter 2:24: \u2018[Christ] bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.\u2019 So, Peter attaches the substitutionary death of Jesus with the sin-conquering effect of that death in one sentence.\u201d He called for an evangelism that asked those struggling with gender identity to be shown the \u201cbetter way\u201d of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Piper declared the issue of gender confusion to be a \u201cserious issue\u201d that \u201cdefies God\u201d and \u201cinvolves living a lie.\u201d He warned that acquiescence to gender pronouns could lead to further distortions of marriage, including \u201chuman-animal marriage.\u201d \u201cTherefore,\u201d warned Piper, \u201cthe greatest possible care should be taken before one gives any impression of approving or even being mildly agreeable toward so-called transgenderism.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>John Piper has spoken out against \u201cgender pronoun hospitality,\u201d calling it a \u201cfalse view of reality.\u201d Piper addressed the issue when he received a question about it on his \u201cAsk Pastor John\u201d podcast.
