{"id":2371,"date":"2010-09-08T11:32:18","date_gmt":"2010-09-08T11:32:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/news\/2010\/09\/prominent-faith-leaders-denoun.php"},"modified":"2010-09-08T11:32:18","modified_gmt":"2010-09-08T11:32:18","slug":"prominent-faith-leaders-denoun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/news\/2010\/09\/prominent-faith-leaders-denoun","title":{"rendered":"Prominent Faith Leaders Denounce Islamophobia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON (RNS) Three dozen faith leaders Tuesday (Sept. 7) issued<br \/>\na declaration denouncing anti-Muslim bigotry as the nation prepares to<br \/>\nmark the anniversary of the 9\/11 attacks at a time of inflamed religious<br \/>\ntensions.<br \/>\nIngrid Mattson, president of the Islamic Society of North America,<br \/>\nwas joined by Christian and Jewish leaders in responding to the<br \/>\n&#8220;atmosphere of fear and contempt&#8221; generated by the controversy over<br \/>\nplans to build an Islamic center near Ground Zero. She said fellow<br \/>\nMuslims are feeling levels of anxiety similar to just after the 9\/11<br \/>\nattacks.<br \/>\n&#8220;They are nervous about their children as they head back to school<br \/>\nthis week, that when they go to school they are going to face people who<br \/>\nare looking at them as aliens when in fact they are citizens that were<br \/>\nborn in this country,&#8221; said Mattson.<br \/>\nThe faith leaders were especially critical of plans by a<br \/>\nGainesville, Fla., church to burn copies of the Quran, the Muslim holy<br \/>\nbook, on Saturday, the ninth anniversary of the attacks.<br \/>\n&#8220;We insist that no religion should be judged on the words or actions<br \/>\nof those who seek to pervert it through acts of violence,&#8221; reads the<br \/>\ntwo-page statement.<br \/>\nThe 35 religious leaders who gathered for the &#8220;emergency interfaith<br \/>\nmeeting&#8221; said they could no longer be silent about recent attacks on<br \/>\nMuslims and mosques.<br \/>\n&#8220;That is not what we are about,&#8221; said Rabbi David Saperstein,<br \/>\ndirector of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism. &#8220;It is not<br \/>\nwhat our religions are about and it is not what this nation is about.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe Rev. Richard Cizik, president of the New Evangelical Partnership<br \/>\nfor the Common Good, said of evangelicals who participate in<br \/>\nanti-Islamic bigotry: &#8220;I say shame on you.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe leaders urged acts of cooperation among interfaith leaders at<br \/>\nthe state and local level to demonstrate solidarity with Muslims.<br \/>\nSome of the participants in the meeting were scheduled to meet with<br \/>\nAttorney General Eric Holder Tuesday afternoon to discuss action by the<br \/>\nJustice Department to address the recent intimidation and violence<br \/>\nagainst Muslims.<br \/>\n&#8212; Adelle M.
