It\u2019s our responsibility to protect this integral aspect of our country because, without it, we would stray from our core values. For\u00a0a long time,\u00a0teachers have been told to leave their\u00a0beliefs\u00a0at the schoolhouse gate,\u00a0forcing them to choose between public employment and their\u00a0religious\u00a0convictions and values. However, this should never be the case. Teachers shouldn\u2019t be\u00a0forced to sacrifice or hide their\u00a0religious\u00a0beliefs\u00a0because school administrators want them to, and they shouldn\u2019t be held to a different standard simply because they are\u00a0religious.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica Tapia, a former teacher from Southern California, was held to a different standard because of her religion. Her school district created a religious litmus test to be a teacher, and because Tapia didn\u2019t pass this test, the school district fired her. Near the end of the 2021-2022 school year, she received a notice of unprofessional conduct due to personal social media posts she had posted about her faith. The school district gave Tapia a list of directives to follow to remain employed with the school district. Some of these directives were based on hypothetical situations that Jessica did not experience during her employment.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4jE8MJ6HSKo?si=bT4_Y9zXxEhvjlIF\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Other directives required Jessica to lie to parents and students about gender identity, refrain from posting\u00a0religious\u00a0content on her social media, and allow boys into the girls\u2019 locker rooms. Tapia stated that those directives violated her faith and requested accommodations. Instead of working with her to reasonably accommodate her requests, the school district told Tapia she either had to comply with its directives or face termination. She was\u00a0fired.<\/p>\n<p>In May,\u00a0Tapia\u2019s case was settled against the school district\u00a0for\u00a0$360,000, ensuring that educators of faith around the country won\u2019t face\u00a0religious\u00a0discrimination, regardless of their\u00a0beliefs, and can seek legal repercussions if they do. This settlement shows school districts that there will be legal consequences\u00a0for\u00a0requiring\u00a0teachers to violate their faith and right to\u00a0religious\u00a0liberty on the job.\u00a0However, Tapia\u2019s case is not unique.\u00a0Teachers across this country face persecution every day.<\/p>\n<p>No government, whether federal, state or local, has the authority to\u00a0force employees to violate their\u00a0religious\u00a0beliefs\u00a0on the job.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Religious\u00a0freedom\u00a0is a cornerstone of the American republic.
