It assessed a<br \/>\npenalty of $5,539.<br \/>\nIn a Tuesday (June 8) statement, the church acknowledged a reporting<br \/>\nerror.<br \/>\n&#8220;In the last two weeks leading up to the election, the Church<br \/>\nmistakenly overlooked the daily reporting requirement for non-monetary<br \/>\ncontributions and instead reported those contributions together in a<br \/>\nlater filing,&#8221; it said.<br \/>\n&#8220;The Church appreciates the fairness and consideration with which<br \/>\nthe Fair Political Practices Commission has addressed this oversight.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe church said the money related to staff time used by church<br \/>\nemployees to support the Protect Marriage coalition&#8217;s &#8220;Yes on 8&#8221;<br \/>\ninitiative during the last two weeks before the election.<br \/>\nThe Human Rights Campaign, a gay rights organization, hailed the<br \/>\npenalty, which was scheduled to be finalized at a commission meeting on<br \/>\nThursday (June 10).<br \/>\n&#8220;While the recommended fine of just more than $5,500 for the<br \/>\nunreported late contributions of $36,968 to the Yes on 8 campaign may<br \/>\nseem inconsequential, it represents a pattern of blatant disregard for<br \/>\nCalifornia election laws and provides ongoing evidence that the Mormon<br \/>\nChurch was a significant leader in the campaign to repeal marriage<br \/>\nequality, even while it evaded standard reporting requirements and<br \/>\ndenied its involvement,&#8221; the group said.<br \/>\nThe LDS church denied any intentional wrongdoing.<br \/>\n&#8220;Claims that the Church misrepresented its contributions to the<br \/>\nProtect Marriage Coalition are false,&#8221; it said.<br \/>\n&#8212; Adelle M.
