House Speaker Mike Johnson recently affirmed at a press conference that President Joe Biden\u2019s election as president \u201cmust\u2019ve been God\u2019s will.\u201d Johnson was speaking at a weekly press conference when the question came up from the press. \u201cI know where you\u2019re going with this,\u201d he <\/span>responded<\/span><\/a>. Johnson affirmed his position on God\u2019s absolute authority, saying, \u201cI said in my speech before I took the gavel that, look, I’m a Bible-believing Christian, right? A Bible-believing Christian believes what the Bible says, right? The Bible says that God is the one who raises up people in authority.\u201d He stated his beliefs were consistent with those of the founding fathers, who affirmed that rights come from God. \u201cEverybody’s made the same. We all are given equal rights and value, and that’s something that we defend,\u201d he said. Based on those beliefs, Johnson said, \u201c[Biden\u2019s election] must’ve been God’s will then. That’s my belief.\u201d The Speaker did add, however, that he believes that God grants free will and that \u201cwe\u2019re gonna make a much better choice as a country coming up in this election cycle. We\u2019re very much looking forward to that regime change.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

President Trump\u2019s former White House aide, Steve Bannon, <\/span>blasted Johnson\u2019s comments<\/span><\/a>. After playing a clip of the Speaker\u2019s response on his show \u201cWar Room,\u201d Bannon griped, \u201cYo, dude, he\u2019s an illegitimate president. Have you lost your freaking mind? This election was stolen.\u201d He then complained that Johnson shouldn\u2019t \u201cbe a theologian.\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t need a theologian. He is the Speaker of the House. That\u2019s what the country needs. Joe Biden\u2019s not a legitimate president of the United States. No to the Speaker. So no, God did not raise him up.\u201d Bannon has been a vocal supporter of President Trump, despite leaving the administration in 2017 for reported clashes, and has stood by the former president\u2019s claims of the 2020 election being stolen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Johnson, too, has faced scrutiny for being one of the 147 GOP members who refused to certify the 2020 election. He also supported members of the GOP signing an amicus brief for a Texas lawsuit that questioned the 2020 election results. In <\/span>an interview with Margaret Brennan<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on \u201cFace the Nation,\u201d Johnson denied characterizations of himself as an \u201celection denier.\u201d He did, however, assert his belief that the Constitution was violated in order to make President Biden\u2019s win possible. \u201cThe Constitution was violated in the run-up to the 2020 election, not always in bad faith, but in the aftermath of Covid, many states changed their election laws in ways that violated that plain language. That\u2019s just a fact,\u201d he said. He stated, however, that the situation was now \u201cwater under the bridge.\u201d He also dismissed criticisms from former representative Liz Cheney, who stated Johnson used the amicus brief as a \u201cbait and switch.\u201d He alleged that Cheney herself had considered signing the brief. \u201cBut I\u2019m telling you that the plain language of the Constitution has never changed. And what happened in many states by changing the election laws without ratification by the state legislatures is a violation of the Constitution. … That\u2019s a plain fact that no one can dispute,\u201d he asserted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
