According to the local outlet, children in the village of 500 people were reduced to tears after the priest smashed their pumpkins, and Smejkal stomped them for a second night in a row when they made replacements.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fkurdejov%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02HchDmN59mczofyCsghQVSDQAmKy8aqL85754DWAVDmG83mWR9uQovL1nbva8VpyRl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"647\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>He noted in his apology that he had no intention of harming the children and wouldn\u2019t have destroyed their pumpkins if he\u2019d known they had made them. The priest said, adding that he came to realize that the\u00a0alleged \u201csymbols of evil spirits\u201d weren\u2019t intended to \u201cexpress contempt for what is holy to us Catholics,\u201d \u201cBut try to remember that my duty as a figure of authority and a priest is to protect children and families from hidden evil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The villagers of Kurdejov were reportedly \u201cdisgusted\u201d by the priest\u2019s destruction of the pumpkins, which were part of an event organized by local mothers. Pavel Kafka, Smejkal\u2019s superior in the Diocese of Bmo, also denounced his actions as inadequate in a statement posted on the village\u2019s Facebook page. The Czech Republic has become one of the least religious countries in the world since the first half of the 20th century, with just 21 percent of Czechs now identifying as Christian, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/world-news\/2023\/10\/22\/czechia-catholic-priest-destroys-halloween-pumpkins\/\">according to <\/a><em>The Telegraph.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Many Czechs still enjoy celebrating traditional religious holidays like All Souls\u2019 Day.
