I can\u2019t say, \u2018Oh, it was a cult.\u2019 I will leave that to the experts. But I will say that a lot of things make it tough for kids to leave or families to leave because the community is so tight-knit. The teachings are based on rules \u2013 man-made rules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gothard, a prominent Christian evangelist, founded the Institute for Basic Life Principles (IBLP) in 1961. His organization has conducted Bible-based seminars around the country since the \u201960s on subjects ranging from conflict resolution to achieving financial success. His so-called \u201cchain of command\u201d teachings promote the belief that God put bosses, city leaders, and husbands in elevated positions.<\/p>\n<p>Duggar Vuolo alleged that Gothard\u2019s teachings \u201care based on fear and superstition,\u201d which left her with a crippling anxiety that she still struggles with today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a healthy fear of God\u00a0that the Bible speaks of, but it\u2019s more of an awe reverence, realizing the greatness of God,\u201d she explained. \u201cBut sadly, Bill Gothard would take one verse of the Bible and make it say whatever he wanted it to say, and he would make up his own man-made rules and say, \u2018This is the Bible.\u2019 And then he would have you vow to God to keep this principle. It was very binding. He would say, \u2018Never break your vow before God.\u2019 It was fear-based.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qp2i89AIWC4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The goal of IBLP is to provide others with a \u201cclear institution and training on how to find success by following God\u2019s principles found in Scripture.\u201d IBLP\u2019s site claims that \u201cover 2.5 million people\u201d have attended their seminars.<\/p>\n<p>Duggar Vuolo was raised by her parents, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, devout followers of IBLP. The movement teaches that women should be subservient to their husbands and that followers should shun dancing, dating and much of pop culture, People magazine reported. According to the outlet, Jim Bob, 57, and Michelle, 56, have spoken at IBLP seminars.<\/p>\n<p>TLC\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/19_Kids_and_Counting\">19 Kids &amp; Counting\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 chronicled the lives of the growing Duggar family and aired from 2008 until 2015. \u201cCounting On,\u201d which focused on the family\u2019s older children, ran from 2015 until 2021. In her book, Duggar Vuolo claimed that she \u201csaw so much sadness in so many families I knew and loved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Duggar Vuolo said it would not be until 2017 that her outlook on the religion began to change. She said she spoke to her family about exiting IBLP after she started wearing pants. She also\u00a0told them about her new book.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t want my siblings to wonder,\u201d she explained. \u201cThose conversations have continued throughout the past several years. Some have responded better than others. But at the end of the day, I know they just want the best for me.\u201d While her faith has changed, Duggar Vuolo stressed that she is still a devoted Christian and is hopeful that her book will show
