The hosts of \u201cThe View\u201d joined the \u201cnepo babies\u201d debate, with co-host Whoopi Goldberg declaring, \u201cI don\u2019t know anyone who wouldn\u2019t give their kid a step-up if they could.\u201d A \u201c<\/span>nepo baby<\/span><\/a>,\u201d with \u201cnepo\u201d being short for \u201cnepotism,\u201d refers to any person, typically a celebrity, whose parent is also either a celebrity or successful person who seems to have been given their position due to their own parent\u2019s success or connections. The debate and term first gained steam last February with a\u00a0<\/span>tweet<\/span><\/a>\u00a0about \u201cEuphoria\u201d actress Maude Apatow. \u201cWait, I just found out that the actress that plays Lexie is a nepotism baby,\u201d the tweet said, \u201cher mom is Leslie Mann, and her dad is a movie director, lol.\u201d The director is\u00a0<\/span>Judd Apatow<\/span><\/a>, who has directed popular comedies like \u201cThe 40-Year-Old Virgin\u201d and \u201cKnocked Up.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Goldberg\u2019s fellow co-host Sunny Hostin pointed out that nepotism has always existed in various industries. \u201cNepotism has been going on all over the place. We had one Bush and another Bush president. We had one Cheney, and we had another Cheney,\u201d she pointed out. \u201cAny parent is going to try to make sure that their children have a better life than they had,\u201d she added. The hosts also pointed out that a \u201cnepo baby\u201d isn\u2019t necessarily talentless or didn\u2019t have to work for their position. Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin stated that they should, however, \u201cacknowledge the privilege.\u201d Most of the hosts did not consider themselves as having gained their current positions through nepotism. \u201cI didn\u2019t have a leg up. I got where I got because I got it,\u201d said <\/span>Goldberg<\/span><\/a>, whose mother was a nurse and teacher and whose father was a Baptist clergyman.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While \u201cThe View\u201d co-hosts mostly defended \u201cnepo babies,\u201d others have been very critical. Actress <\/span>Gwyneth Paltrow<\/span><\/a>, whose parents were an actress and producer\/director, acknowledged last July that the playing field is \u201c<\/span>not level<\/span><\/a>.\u201d She stated, however, that although nepotism allows people like her to get their foot in the door, they have to work twice as hard to prove themselves. Actress\u00a0<\/span>Jamie Lee Curtis<\/span><\/a>, whose parents were also actors, defended \u201cnepo babies\u201d in an\u00a0<\/span>Instagram post<\/span><\/a>. After stating she had been working since the age of 19, Curtis wrote, \u201cThe current conversation about nepo babies is just designed to try to diminish and denigrate and hurt. For the record, I have navigated 44 years with the advantages my associated and reflected fame brought me. I don\u2019t pretend there aren\u2019t any that try to tell me that I have no value on my own. It\u2019s curious how we immediately make assumptions and snide remarks that someone related to someone else who is famous in their field for their art would somehow have no talent whatsoever. I have come to learn that is simply not true.\u201d She went on to say she was proud of her lineage and encouraged others to \u201cbe kind.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, on the other side of the debate is how some have noted certain \u201cnepo babies\u201d appear to be far less talented than others in their field. A December <\/span>Vulture<\/span><\/em><\/a>\u00a0article pointed out that some of the stars with the biggest roles in 2022 didn\u2019t seem to meet expectations. Merriem Derradji, who originated the tweet about Maude Apatow, stated, \u201cYou would see models walk super-well and then there\u2019s Kendall Jenner walking, and you\u2019re like, Oh my gosh. It\u2019s really bad. She walks like a normal person.\u201d Jenner, a member of the famous\u00a0<\/span>Kardashian<\/span><\/a>\u00a0family, makes it at the top of the list of \u201cnepo babies\u201d who seem to be merely famous for being famous. Dakota Johnson, whose parents are Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, has faced similar criticism. An August\u00a0<\/span>Bloomberg<\/span><\/a>\u00a0article, entitled \u201cOpen Your Mind to the Benefits of Nepotism,\u201d summed up the debate with the subline- \u201cSociety rightly condemns promoting unqualified progeny to unsuitable jobs, but there\u2019s still value in passing down the family business.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
