Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway, known for her roles in films like \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada\u201d and \u201cThe Princess Diaries,\u201d said last week on \u201cThe View\u201d that abortion is just \u201canother word for mercy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 39-year-old celebrity told the co-hosts of the ABC talk show that abortion is necessary for women\u2019s health and professional advancement. Hathaway spoke of her \u201cpersonal experience with abortion\u201d when she said the life-ending procedure \u201ccan be another word for mercy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t know,\u201d she said emphatically. \u201cWe know that no two pregnancies are alike, and it follows that no two lives are alike; it follows that no two conceptions are alike.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo how can we have a law \u2014 how can we have a point of view on this \u2014 that says we must treat everything the same?\u201d continued the actor. \u201cWhen you allow for choice, you allow for flexibility, which is what we need in order to be human.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cLes Miserables\u201d star made the remarks after co-host Joy Behar asked her to riff on an Instagram post the celebrity published just days after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned\u00a0Roe v. Wade<\/em>, the 1973 landmark decision that gave nationwide legal cover to abortion access. During her segment on \u201cThe View\u201d \u2014 and in the Instagram post \u2014 Hathaway retrofitted a pro-abortion storyline onto \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada,\u201d which debuted in theaters June 30, 2006.<\/p>\n

\u201cI played a young woman who was starting out her career,\u201d she said of the film, loosely based on a real-life assistant\u2019s gig with famous Vogue editor Anna Wintour. \u201cAnd when you are a young woman starting out your career, your reproductive destiny matters a great deal. And I just \u2014 it had just happened, and I just \u2014 I think about it all the time. I think we all think about it all the time, and what the implications are, and what it means to live in a country that puts us in this position.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hathaway later added her support for abortion is \u201cnot a moral conversation.\u201d \u201cThis is a practical conversation about women\u2019s rights, and, by the way, human rights, because women\u2019s rights are human rights,\u201d she claimed.<\/p>\n
