While most people think humans will never be able to prove what happens after death, half of adults still believe their spirit lives on, somewhere.

The new survey of over 1,000 people in the United Kingdom, commissioned by SpiritShack Ltd, finds that 50 percent of respondents believe in an afterlife. Of this group, 60 percent believe everyone experiences the same thing when they die — regardless of their individual beliefs. However, two in three think scientists will never be able to tell us what really happens when someone passes.

Regardless of whether people think they’re going to heaven (55%) or worry their life choices could send them to hell (58%), the poll finds that 68 percent of all respondents have no fear of what comes next. However, 69 percent would rather live another life after leaving this one instead of simply seeing their existence end.

As for what people think heaven or hell might be like, 28 percent say their religion has shaped their opinions, while another 23 percent say a personal experience with death molded their views. Overall, one in four think people go to heaven or hell, 16 percent believe they’ll exist in a “spiritual realm,” and 16 percent believe in reincarnation.

No matter where we go after death, it’s safe to stay; many people hope to reunite with loved ones from this life. Unsurprisingly, that also includes giving our furry friends one more hug. Nearly half of the poll (45%) believe their pets end up in the same place they do when we all die. Two in five think they’ll reunite with their pets in the afterlife. Interestingly, most respondents added that they believe their pets come back through reincarnation — even though only one in six say the same about humans.

unsplash.com

One in three admit they’ve tried to contact the dead for those who can’t wait to reunite with their loved ones. More than two in five people claim they’ve felt the presence of a deceased relative, and 30 percent think it’s possible to communicate with these people.

Among those trying to contact the dead, 52 percent have had a medium help them, 33 percent have turned to prayer, and 18 percent have broken out the Ouija board. One in five people says they’d pay over $1,300 to talk to a dead relative again.

No matter what happens after death, respondents are confident it’ll be an improvement over their current life. The poll finds adults think heaven provides people with a chance to recapture the things they’ve lost throughout their life. The vast majority (86%) think the afterlife involves a sense of peace and 66 percent describe it as a place of happiness. Three in five adults believe there will be no more suffering when they die.

However, respondents think there are a few conditions people need to follow to reach this peaceful realm. Over four in five people (84%) say you have to live a good life and be a generally good person to reach heaven. One in three claims you have to place your faith in a higher power to get to the afterlife, and one in five say it requires you to confess all your sins.

Is there an afterlife?
