President Trump said during a Sunday press briefing that it was \u201cdisgraceful\u201d his new Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett was being criticized on the basis of her Catholic faith.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have noticed some comments made in the media about my incredibly qualified nominee, Amy,\u201d said Trump. \u201cThe New York Times said her religion is not consistent with American values \u2014 she\u2019s Catholic.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s a very disgraceful thing to say,\u201d Trump said Sunday of the critique.<\/p>\n
Trump similarly lashed out at \u201ccomedians\u201d he didn\u2019t identify by name. He said, \u201cI don\u2019t think they\u2019re comedians, because comedians are supposed to be funny,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re nasty. They\u2019re mean. They think they\u2019re funny.\u201d<\/p>\n
Critics of Barrett\u2019s nomination \u2014 which would further tilt the scales of the Supreme Court in favor of its conservative wing, six justices to three \u2014 have voiced concerns that her Catholic ideals might get in the way of legal impartiality on matters including abortion.<\/p>\n
Trump is not the only one who is angered by the treatment from the media. Former House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy told \u201cThe Daily Briefing\u201d that it is “incredibly disgraceful” of the Senate Democrats saying they refuse to meet with Barrett before the confirmation hearing.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe media also wanted us to believe that Nancy Pelosi was a devout Catholic,” he said. “They used that term a lot with her and with Joe Biden. They wanted us to believe because he held rosary beads or because she prayed for her enemies. But now, they use that phrase ‘devout Catholic’ because they want to scare us about her.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI think she’s smart enough to separate her religious beliefs from the oath,\u201d Gowdy went on. \u201cIf she takes an oath that she’s going to give priority to the Constitution over any other personal belief, I believe her when she takes it.”<\/p>\n
