President Donald Trump told reporters on Saturday that an anti-malaria drug that could be used to treat those who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 would be a \u2018gift from God\u2019 if it works.<\/p>\n

Hydroxychloroquine has been used for years to treat malaria, and azithromycin, also commonly referred to as a Z-pack is often used to treat sinus and upper respiratory infections. Some studies suggest that this cocktail could shorten the duration of symptoms for those who get the virus.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel very good about it,\u201d said Trump. \u201c[Dr. Anthony Fauci] would feel like, \u2018I\u2019d like samples done in a certain way,\u2019 and I understand that, too. Many doctors agree with that. But we don\u2019t have much time. We have a lot of very sick people right now in hospitals all over the place.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president added, \u201cRight now, this, to me, would be the greatest thing that could happen. This would be a gift from heaven. This would be a gift from God, if it works. So we\u2019re gonna pray to God that it does work. It\u2019d be a fantastic thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The small study out of France analyzed 26 patients who had COVID-19 and treated them with the hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin. Six of those who were treated tested negative for the virus after only six days.<\/p>\n

Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institution of Allergy and Infectious Diseases was adamant that there is no cure all for COVID-19, he did say that it is \u201cnot an unreasonable thing to hope for people\u201d that the anti-malaria drug could be an effective therapy for those sick with the disease.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are those who lean to the point of giving hope and saying, \u2018Give that person the option of having access to that drug,\u2019 and then you have the other group, which is my job as a scientist, to say, my job is to ultimately prove, without a doubt, that a drug is not only safe, but that it actually works. Those two things are really not incompatible,\u201d Fauci said.<\/p>\n

Presumably, 10,000 units of the drug cocktail are being sent to New York which is now considered the epicenter in the U.S. for the virus.<\/p>\n
