Ilhan Omar found herself in hot water for doing just that, when she made a tweet mocking the faith of Vice President Mike Pence.<\/p>\n<p>Omar posted a photo of Pence in the Oval Office with his eyes closed during a meeting between Trump and Democrat leaders this week about the border wall. She captioned the photo with the phrase, &#8220;Jesus take the wheel.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Jesus take the wheel! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BorderWall?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BorderWall<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/aEPle6HFF1\">pic.twitter.com\/aEPle6HFF1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IlhanMN\/status\/1072617704912289793?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 11, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The tweet quickly went viral on the net, igniting serious debate. Many accused Omar of making fun of Christian beliefs, and called it a double standard as Omar identifies with the Muslim faith.<\/p>\n<p>Omar, whose roots are from a Muslim minority and a Somali-immigrants background, made history when winning in the midterm elections for being the first Muslim and hijabi women to enter the U.S. Congress. She was also known for spelling out the issues dealt by minorities in American society and mainly related to Islamophobic attacks.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time the newly elected congresswomen has been called out for inappropriate remarks. In 2012, she tweeted that &#8220;Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel. #Gaza #Palestine #Israel.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Many people criticized Omar for her tweet and accused her of repeating old anti-Semitic ideas about Jews &#8220;deceiving&#8221; the world.<\/p>\n<p>Omar stood firm, however, and refused to retract her tweet. She later told ABC News that she is not anti-Semitic. Instead, it&#8217;s her critics who are the real bigots, she claims.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These accusations are without merit.
