Yes, says Robert Kirbyson, director of \u201cRed Line,\u201d which takes place entirely in a mangled subway car underneath the streets of Los Angeles. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Crewed almost entirely by student interns at a tiny Catholic school &#8212; John Paul the Great University &#8212; it\u2019s a film that industry professionals said couldn\u2019t be done. How could a little school have the budget for a disaster flick? Even if\u00a0the school\u00a0could handle\u00a0 production logistics,\u00a0how could\u00a0a bunch of kids\u00a0have any\u00a0hope of attracting a star cast or\u00a0turning out\u00a0a professional-looking movie.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Christopher Riley said the kids were up to the challenge &#8212; and rose to the occasion.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12103\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12103\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2013\/06\/2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12103\" alt=\"2\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2013\/06\/2.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12103\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nicole Gale Anderson in &#8220;Red Line.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And, notes,\u00a0Kirbyson, they were able to draw\u00a0two lead actors \u2013 John Billingsley, perhaps best known as Dr. Phlox on the TV show \u201cStar Trek: Enterprise\u201d \u00a0and Hannah Montana\u2019s Nicole Gale Anderson.<\/p>\n<p>Billingsley has also appeared in the film \u201cThe Man from Earth\u201d (2007) as well as episodes of \u201cScrubs,\u201d \u201cThe Mentalist,\u201d \u201c24\u201d and other television shows. Anderson, 20, was in the movie \u201cJonas\u201d (2007), \u201cMean Girls 2\u201d (2009) and \u201ciCarly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This low-budget ($200,000) film was a challenge, says Kirbyson. Back in 2010, producers Riley and Dominic Locco, both professors at the little Catholic university, challenged students to come up with script ideas that could be filmed at the school\u2019s new sound stage.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12104\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12104\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2013\/06\/3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12104\" alt=\"3\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2013\/06\/3.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12104\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">John Billingsley in the disaster film &#8220;Red Line.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Student Tara Stone\u00a0offered a \u201cPoseidon Adventure\u201d-type drama about the survivors of a subway explosion. After a month of intensive writing and re-writing, the group\u00a0turned out\u00a0a screenplay focusing on the drama of digging out of the rubble \u2013 and surviving each other.<\/p>\n<p>The film employed some film professionals who are department heads at the university, \u201cbut the overwhelming majority on the crew are students who were also taking classes and exams during production,\u201d notes Kirbyson.<\/p>\n<p>Principal filming began May 11. \u201cPickup\u201d filming was followed by post-production work, which included editing, sound design and musical scoring. The film had to be finished quickly to make the entry deadline for the Sundance Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2013\/06\/1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-12102\" alt=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2013\/06\/1.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"691\" \/><\/a>Doing well at those festivals is crucial if the film is going to get any attention \u2013 or ever gain a larger audience.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019ll shop it at festivals and hopefully get picked up for theatrical release,\u201d said Kirbyson.<\/p>\n<p>Even if \u201cRed Line\u201d never makes it into theaters, investors will make back their money through direct to DVD release and pay-per-view.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12105\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12105\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2013\/06\/4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12105\" alt=\"4\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2013\/06\/4.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12105\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Can a bunch of college students pull off &#8220;Red Line?&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Video on Demand is being handled by Universal Pictures. DVD release will be through Redbox, Amazon, Walmart and Blockbuster.<\/p>\n<p>Will the film be coming soon to a theater near you?<\/p>\n<p>It all depends on how audiences receive it at those crucial festivals, says the director.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHopefully, people will think they are seeing a big-budget movie and like it,\u201d says Kirbyson. \u201cThen, when they find out it was a made by a mostly student crew, we will impress them even more.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Can a bunch of San Diego college students pull off a thriller disaster film?
