Roberts calls \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehighcalling.org\/reflection\/one-most-commonly-disobeyed-verses-bible\">one of the most commonly disobeyed verses in the Bible<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI urge you,\u201d Paul told Timothy, \u201cfirst of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority\u201d (1 Timothy 2:1-2).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were to do so even if that ruler was tyrannical, and even though they had no ability to influence the choice of ruler or the policies of the ruler,\u201d writes Roberts.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12041\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12041\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2013\/01\/roman-martyr.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12041\" title=\"roman martyr\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2013\/01\/roman-martyr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"232\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12041\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It&#8217;s not always easy to pray for those in power.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In other words, even if a Christian detests the person in power, we are supposed to pray for him or her anyway.<\/p>\n<p>And there\u2019s nothing in the Bible about clergy being the only ones who can lift up our leaders to the Almighty. So, President Barack Obama was well within Bible guidelines when he broke historic precedent on the eve of his second inauguration. He selected the first layperson ever, Mrs. Myrlie Evers-Williams, the widow of slain civil rights activist Medgar Evers, to offer the benediction.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12024\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12024\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2013\/01\/evers.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12024\" title=\"evers\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2013\/01\/evers.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12024\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Myrlie Evers-Williams<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the past, that honor has been reserved for men of the cloth. No woman has ever given an official prayer at an inauguration. In 1937, the first recorded time that a clergyman opened the inauguration, the invocation or opening call for God to help and be present was given by the Chaplain of the U.S. Senate, Episcopal Clergyman ZeBarney Thorne Phillips.<\/p>\n<p>The benediction or closing prayer asking God\u2019s blessing on the departing officials and crowd was given by Catholic priest John A.
