Only 5 percent consider the church\u2019s influence to be negative. However, \u201cAmericans are struggling to determine how faith, Christianity and church fit into modern life,\u201d reports Barna.<\/p>\n<p>Among 2011\u2019s other trends:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Forty-one percent of Americans are unable to identify who they consider to be an influential Christian,&#8221; reported Barna. When surveyed about their Christian heroes, many Americans came up blank.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10575\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10575\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/news\/files\/2011\/12\/billygraham-praying.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10575\" title=\"billygraham-praying\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/140\/2011\/12\/billygraham-praying-e1325019939804.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"323\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10575\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Billy Graham<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cOnly Billy Graham, the Pope, Barack Obama and Joel Osteen were mentioned by more than 1 out of 50 adults as the most significant Christian leaders,&#8221; reported Barna.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother way in which Christianity hit the mainstream radar was prominent discussion about hell,\u201d reported Barna. \u201cThis issue sparked so much controversy and vigorous debate in part because America is<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/Love-Family\/Home-Page-News-and-Views\/Barna-2011-trends.aspx?p=2\" target=\"_blank\">CONTINUED on page 2<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eight out of ten young Christian adults in America have no idea how to apply their faith to their daily living, reports pollster George Barna.
