{"id":29,"date":"2008-12-08T15:22:58","date_gmt":"2008-12-08T15:22:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/mormoninquiry\/2008\/12\/books-for-under-the-tree.html"},"modified":"2008-12-08T15:22:58","modified_gmt":"2008-12-08T15:22:58","slug":"books-for-under-the-tree","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/mormoninquiry\/2008\/12\/books-for-under-the-tree.html","title":{"rendered":"Books for under the tree"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here are links to three recent discussions of LDS books that might make it under your Christmas tree this year, either in the traditional manner (you buy it for a loved one) or the modern guaranteed-to-get-it-right style (you buy it, hand it to a loved one, and say &#8220;this would make a great present to me if you don&#8217;t have something else lined up&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Making Sense of the Doctrine &amp; Covenants [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1590389212\/davesmormonin-20\">$27 at Amazon<\/a>]. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bycommonconsent.com\/2008\/11\/making-sense-of-the-doctrine-covenants\/\">J. at BCC reviewed this new book<\/a> and gave it a strong recommendation.<\/li>\n<li>A Disciple&#8217;s Life: The Biography of Neal A. Maxwell [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1570088330\/davesmormonin-20\">$23 at Amazon<\/a>]. This one has been out a few years, but seems to have become more popular lately. I have a copy on my shelf that&#8217;s on &#8220;long-term loan&#8221; from a friend. Bruce C. Hafen, an LDS General Authority, is the author. <a href=\"http:\/\/gentlyhewstone.wordpress.com\/2008\/12\/02\/book-review-a-disciples-life-the-biography-of-neal-a-maxwell\/\">Gently Hew Stone has a review up<\/a> that gives it ho-hum marks, more for the editorial approach than for the content.<\/li>\n<li>Nauvoo Polygamy [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1560852011\/davesmormonin-20\">$26 at Amazon<\/a>]. Another new book.  Amazon says &#8220;temporarily out of stock,&#8221; so it must be selling well. I have a review copy but haven&#8217;t had a chance to read it yet. (On the back cover, Klaus J.
