In the process of developing<br \/>\nthe materials, I did a video blog on a topic that seems to get people<br \/>\npassionate about their stance.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The topic<br \/>\nis age-old but I am bringing it into the medical milieu today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Let&#8217;s set the stage.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>Bring yourself back to the moment you learned of Bill Clinton&#8217;s &#8216;extra-curricular<br \/>\nactivities&#8217; during his presidential career.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>Were you of the camp that said, &#8220;It&#8217;s his personal life and it has<br \/>\nnothing to do with his professional abilities and integrity&#8221;?<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Or were you like those who were concerned<br \/>\nthat these behaviors signal some ethical deviation that likely pervades his<br \/>\ncharacter and raises concerns about his overall decision making compass?<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Now, let&#8217;s get health care about this!<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Should doctors be held to a higher standard<br \/>\nof healthy living as they are mentors, advisors and leaders to their patients<br \/>\non these matters of disease prevention and management?<span>&nbsp; <\/span>If you saw your oncologist smoking a<br \/>\ncigarette out back or your cardiologist chugging down a sugary soda with his greasy<br \/>\nburger, would your confidence and respect waiver?<span>&nbsp; <\/span><span>&nbsp;<\/span>Obviously, doctors have the right to do<br \/>\nwhatever they want legally; however, many patients articulate that it is<br \/>\nprofessionally irresponsible to advise and, at times, preach one thing and then<br \/>\nproceed to behave totally different in one&#8217;s own life.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Interestingly, the Latin origins of the word<br \/>\n&#8216;doctor&#8217; translate to something many of us might not have guessed&#8230; <span>&nbsp;<\/span>&#8216;to teach.&#8217;<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>In both historical and modern times, effective teaching has always<br \/>\nincorporated leading by example.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Integrity is the bottom line here.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>When I tell a patient that coming off of gluten<br \/>\nis necessary to help their asthma or thyroid condition, I can honestly say that<br \/>\nI have walked the walk while I am talking the talk.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>That&#8217;s what patients are inspired to<br \/>\nfollow.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>I am a real person with my own<br \/>\ngenetics, symptoms and lifestyle issues but I hold myself accountable to what I<br \/>\nmust do to get the vibrant, healthy, med-free, disease-free life that I, too,<br \/>\ncrave.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>In my office, I am an open book. <span>&nbsp;<\/span>My labs are laminated and available for<br \/>\npatients to view my stats when I put myself through the similar tests .<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It&#8217;s not required of me but it shows that I<br \/>\nam not &#8216;immune&#8217; from following my own guidelines.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>I am not perfection, nor do I think that there<br \/>\nis such a thing.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>I follow my &#8217;90\/10 rule&#8217;<br \/>\n(I aim for a 90% good choices rate as a measure of success in a world of<br \/>\ninevitable change and limited control!)<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>As I go to social events and celebrate birthdays with my kids, I know that<br \/>\nthe decisions that I make are in line with what I teach my patients every day<br \/>\nin the office.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>(By the way, I am the<br \/>\nfirst one to admit that making effective change in lifestyle is not easy and<br \/>\ntalk about my struggles openly.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">You wouldn&#8217;t go to a hairstylist with bad hair; you wouldn&#8217;t<br \/>\nchoose a financial advisor going through his own personal bankruptcy.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Should patients expect their doctors to be<br \/>\nliving examples of their life&#8217;s work?<span>&nbsp; <\/span><span>&nbsp;<\/span>For me, it&#8217;s logical to be one consistent<br \/>\nperson in all my mini-worlds because constancy of action and action that<br \/>\nfollows my beliefs makes my life simple and true.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am excited about launching a new website that our organization has been dreaming of for years now.
