{"id":14,"date":"2010-08-14T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-08-14T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/medicinetomoveyou\/2010\/08\/going-organic-the-clean-17.html"},"modified":"2010-08-14T05:00:00","modified_gmt":"2010-08-14T05:00:00","slug":"going-organic-the-clean-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/medicinetomoveyou\/2010\/08\/going-organic-the-clean-17.html","title":{"rendered":"Going Organic &#8211; The Clean 17"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\"><br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">In the last twenty years, Americans have been a part of a fast-growing movement.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It&#8217;s a movement so strong that even the nation&#8217;s largest food companies and retailers could not overlook it.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>What could be responsible for $24.5 billion dollars in retail sales in 2009?<span>&nbsp; <\/span>ORGANICS!<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">In 2009, the Organic Trade Commission sponsored the US Families&#8217; Organic Attitudes and Beliefs Study.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>We<br \/>\nlearned that at least 73% of all US households are purchasing some<br \/>\norganic products regularly and 41% of US households have been purchasing<br \/>\norganic products for at least 5 years. As an integrative physician who practices Lifestyle Medicine, I thought I&#8217;d share a few thoughts on the practical side of &#8216;going organic&#8217;.<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\"><font>&nbsp;<\/font>Let&#8217;s begin with the basics.&nbsp; A product can be considered organic if:<\/font><\/p>\n<ol style=\"margin-top: 0in\" type=\"1\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Plants and soil are free of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and fertilizers for 3 years.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>This includes the soil that plants are grown in as well as the food that are fed to organic livestock.<\/font><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Livestock are not given antibiotics, growth hormones, and feed additives.<\/font><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">No bio-engineering is permitted &#8211; otherwise known as &#8216;Genetically Modified&#8217; or &#8216;GMO&#8217;.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>This applies to plants, animals, or animal feed.<\/font><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">No irradiation is permitted.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>This also applies to plants, animals or animal feed.<\/font><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">It&#8217;s<br \/>\nalso important to note that seafood is a class of food products that<br \/>\nare not regulated as organic and cannot be labeled as such. <span>&nbsp;<\/span>It&#8217;s best to avoid all seafood labeled as organic. <br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\"><br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\"><span><\/span>Since<br \/>\ncost is generally a consideration for most patients, I have included a list of<br \/>\nproduce that helps make the most of your organic budget.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>This<br \/>\nlist includes the cleanest produce with the lowest chemical residue and contains those food items generally considered to be the safest of the non-organic produce .<span>&nbsp; <\/span><span><\/span>I encourage you to copy and paste this list into your phone or other PDA so that it&#8217;s available during your next shopping trip.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Without further ado, I give you The Clean 17!<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in\"><b><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Asparagus<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in\"><b><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Avocado<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in\"><b><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Bananas<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in\"><b><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Blueberries<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in\"><b><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Broccoli<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in\"><b><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Brussel Sprouts<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in\"><b><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Cabbage<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in\"><b><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Cauliflower<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in\"><b><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Garlic<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in\"><b><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">Kiwi<\/font><\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in\"><b><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Mango<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in\"><b><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Onions<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in\"><b><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Papaya<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in\"><b><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Pineapple<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in\"><b><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Shelling Peas<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in\"><b><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Sweet Corn<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in\"><b><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">Sweet Potato<\/font><\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in\"><b><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">Watermelon<\/font><\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.25in\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">This post is Part 1 of a 6 part series where we will explore&nbsp;
