{"id":292,"date":"2010-06-18T19:05:15","date_gmt":"2010-06-18T19:05:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/lynnvsekulow\/2010\/06\/public-school-graduations-do-n.html"},"modified":"2010-06-18T19:05:15","modified_gmt":"2010-06-18T19:05:15","slug":"public-school-graduations-do-n","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/lynnvsekulow\/2010\/06\/public-school-graduations-do-n.html","title":{"rendered":"Public School Graduations Do Not Belong in a Church"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Jay,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>More<br \/>\nthan a week has gone by since a district court judge in Connecticut <a href=\"Jay,%20%20More%20than%20a%20week%20has%20gone%20by%20since%20a%20district%20court%20judge%20in%20Connecticut%20ruled%20that%20a%20public%20high%20school%20could%20not%20hold%20its%20two%20high%20schools%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%99%20graduation%20ceremonies%20in%20a%20cathedral,%20yet%20I%20haven%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%99t%20heard%20any%20complaints%20from%20you%21%20Americans%20United,%20along%20with%20the%20ACLU%20of%20Connecticut,%20filed%20the%20lawsuit%20on%20May%205%20on%20behalf%20of%20two%20graduating%20seniors%20and%20their%20parents.%20This%20is%20a%20HUGE%20victory%20protecting%20the%20constitutional%20rights%20of%20all%20students%20and%20our%20legal%20team%20worked%20very%20hard%20to%20secure%20this%20win.%20%20Of%20course,%20I%20know%20you%20don%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%99t%20agree.%20The%20American%20Center%20for%20Law%20and%20Justice%20represented%20the%20school%20district,%20Enfield%20Public%20Schools,%20in%20their%20quest%20to%20retain%20the%20cathedral,%20despite%20the%20fact%20that%20this%20venue%20made%20several%20students%20feel%20uncomfortable%20and%20sent%20the%20message%20to%20students%20that%20one%20particular%20faith%20was%20preferred%20over%20others.%20%20I%20wonder%20if%20you%20would%20have%20defended%20the%20school%20if%20the%20graduation%20was%20being%20held%20at%20a%20mosque,%20synagogue%20or%20Hindu%20temple?%20Do%20you%20think%20the%20Enfield%20Public%20School%20District%20would%20have%20dared%20insist%20that%20students%20should%20receive%20their%20diploma%20in%20a%20venue%20replete%20with%20these%20other%20religion%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%99s%20symbols%20and%20iconography?%20%20Of%20course%20not%21%20Yet,%20the%20Enfield%20school%20board%20thought%20having%20the%20graduation%20ceremonies%20for%20its%20two%20high%20schools%20at%20this%20Christian%20venue%20was%20no%20big%20deal.%20%20What%20is%20even%20more%20puzzling%20is%20that%20the%20cathedral%20wasn%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%99t%20even%20the%20best%20venue.%20There%20were%20many%20other%20secular%20venues%20available%20that%20had%20all%20the%20benefits%20of%20the%20cathedral%20and%20that%20were%20a%20closer%20distance%20to%20Enfield%20%28This%20cathedral%20is%2018%20miles%20away%20from%20Enfield%21%29.%20Thankfully,%20Judge%20Janet%20Hall%20saw%20this%20for%20what%20it%20was%20%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%93%20an%20obvious%20constitutional%20violation.%20%20%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%9CUpon%20attending%20graduation%20ceremonies,%20a%20reasonable%20observer%20would%20conclude%20that%20the%20Board%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%99s%20April%2013,%202010%20decision%20to%20use%20First%20Cathedral%20sends%20the%20message%20that%20the%20Board%20embraces%20the%20religious%20values,%20symbols,%20and%20ideas%20present%20within%20the%20Cathedral,%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%9D%20Hall%20wrote.%20%20%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%9CBy%20choosing%20to%20hold%20graduations%20at%20First%20Cathedral,%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%9D%20she%20continued,%20%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%9CEnfield%20Schools%20sends%20the%20message%20that%20it%20is%20closely%20linked%20with%20First%20Cathedral%20and%20its%20religious%20mission,%20that%20it%20favors%20the%20religious%20over%20the%20irreligious,%20and%20that%20it%20prefers%20Christians%20over%20those%20that%20subscribe%20to%20other%20faiths,%20or%20no%20faith%20at%20all.%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%9D%20%20Since%20the%202nd%20U.S.%20Circuit%20Court%20of%20Appeals%20denied%20the%20school%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%99s%20expedited%20appeal%20on%20the%20preliminary%20injunction%20ruling,%20next%20week%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%99s%20graduation%20ceremonies%20will%20go%20on%20at%20the%20school,%20not%20at%20the%20First%20Cathedral.%20%20The%20court%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%99s%20ruling%20will%20ensure%20that%20no%20student%20or%20parent%20has%20to%20choose%20between%20missing%20their%20own%20graduation%20and%20being%20subjected%20to%20a%20religious%20environment%20of%20a%20faith%20to%20which%20they%20do%20not%20subscribe.%20%20I%20hope%20this%20decision%20lets%20other%20public%20schools%20know%20that%20holding%20important%20events%20at%20religious%20venues%20is%20never%20constitutionally%20acceptable.\">ruled<\/a> that<br \/>\na public high school could not hold its two high schools&#8217; graduation ceremonies<br \/>\nin a cathedral, yet I haven&#8217;t heard any complaints from you!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Americans<br \/>\nUnited, along with the ACLU of Connecticut, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.au.org\/media\/press-releases\/archives\/2010\/05\/au-aclu-enfield-complaint.pdf\">filed the lawsuit<\/a> on May 5 on<br \/>\nbehalf of two graduating seniors and their parents. This decision is a huge victory<br \/>\nprotecting the constitutional rights of all students. Our legal team worked<br \/>\nvery hard to secure this win. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Of<br \/>\ncourse, I know you don&#8217;t agree. The American Center for Law and Justice<br \/>\nrepresented the school district, Enfield Public Schools, in their quest to retain First Cathedral as its graduation spot, despite the fact that this venue made several students feel<br \/>\nuncomfortable and sent the message to students that one particular faith was<br \/>\npreferred over others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>I<br \/>\nwonder if you would have defended the school if the graduation was being held<br \/>\nat a mosque, synagogue or Hindu temple? Do you think the Enfield Public School<br \/>\nDistrict would have dared insist that students should receive their diploma in<br \/>\na venue replete with these other religions&#8217; symbols and iconography? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Of<br \/>\ncourse not! Yet, the Enfield school board thought having the graduation<br \/>\nceremonies at this Christian venue was no big deal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>What<br \/>\nis even more puzzling is that the cathedral wasn&#8217;t even the best venue. There<br \/>\nwere many other secular venues available that had all the benefits of the<br \/>\ncathedral and that were closer in distance to Enfield.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Thankfully,<br \/>\nJudge Janet Hall saw this for what it was &#8211; an obvious constitutional violation.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>&#8220;Upon<br \/>\nattending graduation ceremonies, a reasonable observer would conclude that the<br \/>\nBoard&#8217;s April 13, 2010 decision to use First Cathedral sends the message that<br \/>\nthe Board embraces the religious values, symbols, and ideas present within the<br \/>\nCathedral,&#8221; Hall wrote. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>&#8220;By<br \/>\nchoosing to hold graduations at First Cathedral,&#8221; she continued, &#8220;Enfield<br \/>\nSchools sends the message that it is closely linked with First Cathedral and<br \/>\nits religious mission, that it favors the religious over the irreligious, and<br \/>\nthat it prefers Christians over those that subscribe to other faiths, or no<br \/>\nfaith at all.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Since<br \/>\nthe 2<sup>nd<\/sup> U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/ap\/article\/ALeqM5h5VPqV23vwOvWARuVQUDc9UXljkAD9GB9JBO2\">denied<\/a> the school&#8217;s expedited<br \/>\nappeal on the preliminary injunction ruling, next week&#8217;s graduation ceremonies<br \/>\nwill go on at the school, not at the First Cathedral. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>The<br \/>\ncourt&#8217;s ruling will ensure that no student or parent has to choose between<br \/>\nmissing their own graduation and being subjected to a religious environment of<br \/>\na faith to which they do not subscribe. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I<br \/>\nhope this decision lets other public schools know that holding important events<br \/>\nat religious venues is never constitutionally acceptable.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;line-height: 115%;font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\"><font color=\"#000000\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;line-height: 115%;font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\"><font color=\"#000000\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;line-height: 115%;font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\"><font color=\"#000000\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;line-height: 115%;font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\"><font color=\"#000000\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;line-height: 115%;font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\"><font color=\"#000000\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;line-height: 115%;font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\"><font color=\"#000000\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\"><font color=\"#000000\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;line-height: 115%;font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\"><font color=\"#000000\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;line-height: 115%;font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;color: black;font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'\"><span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;line-height: 115%;font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\"><font color=\"#000000\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'\"><font size=\"3\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span><span><span style=\"color: black\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"5\"><br \/>To subscribe to &#8220;Lynn v.
