{"id":194,"date":"2009-07-02T13:57:58","date_gmt":"2009-07-02T13:57:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/lynnvsekulow\/2009\/07\/life-liberty-and-the-pursuit-o.html"},"modified":"2009-07-02T13:57:58","modified_gmt":"2009-07-02T13:57:58","slug":"life-liberty-and-the-pursuit-o","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/lynnvsekulow\/2009\/07\/life-liberty-and-the-pursuit-o.html","title":{"rendered":"Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"3\">Barry, you and I often disagree on a variety of issues that focus on the interpretation of our constitutional rights.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>But, I am sure you&#8217;ll agree that as we once again celebrate our nation&#8217;s independence, this is the perfect time to reflect on the underpinnings of our freedom &#8211; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.gov\/exhibits\/charters\/declaration.html\">Declaration of Independence <\/a>and the other foundational documents that make up the framework of our republic.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"3\"><span><\/span><\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"3\">It seems more and more people are taking a moment during their July 4th holiday to pause and focus on the Declaration of Independence &#8211; even an increase, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2009\/jul\/01\/patriotic-fourth-revived\/\">Associated Press<\/a>, in the number of people who are reciting the historic document at holiday celebrations.<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><font size=\"3\"><font color=\"#000000\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">The words that Thomas Jefferson wrote 233 years ago still are repeated across America today: &#8220;We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness . . .&#8221;<span>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"3\">The Declaration of Independence has special meaning in places like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/elis\/historyculture\/index.htm\">Ellis Island<\/a>, New York &#8211; the entryway for so many &#8211; including my grandfather &#8211; who came from other countries to call America home.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"3\">In the words of one volunteer who sees to it that the Declaration of Independence is read aloud in one New York community where immigrants gather:<span>&nbsp; <\/span>&#8220;It causes us to stop and reflect about who we are, where we&#8217;ve been and where we&#8217;re going.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It&#8217;s not j ust a day off of work. It&#8217;s a day we can enjoy because people gave their lives for us.&#8221;<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"3\">I am grateful for our many freedoms in this country. And, I am grateful for the men and women of our military who defend and protect these freedoms.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"3\"><span><span><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"5\">To subscribe to &#8220;Lynn v.
