Americans United has now filed a precedent-setting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.au.org\/site\/News2?abbr=pr&amp;page=NewsArticle&amp;id=10397&amp;security=1002&amp;news_iv_ctrl=1241\">lawsuit<\/a> challenging the use of a church for a public high school graduation ceremony in Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p>We had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.au.org\/site\/News2?abbr=pr&amp;page=NewsArticle&amp;id=10295&amp;security=1002&amp;news_iv_ctrl=3022\">asked<\/a> a number of Wisconsin schools to stop the practice of holding graduations in churches.&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.todaystmj4.com\/news\/local\/42337497.html\">One<\/a> complied, but the Elmbrook School District did not. It wants to go on having its activities in the Elmbrook Church in early June.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>This shouldn&#8217;t even be a close question. The church has an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.au.org\/images\/au\/press\/2009\/church_graduation_photo_ex1-4.jpg\">enormous cross<\/a> in its sanctuary (not surprising for a church) and plenty of other religious symbols throughout the building (also not surprising).&nbsp; The church <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/news\/waukesha\/43455537.html\">refuses<\/a> to cover up the icons of the faith, and I certainly understand that as well.&nbsp; What I don&#8217;t understand is why the two schools involved, years ago, didn&#8217;t start looking for another locus for the celebration of graduation day. Motivation should have been increased after church members distributed church literature to attendees in the lobby one year. <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Our plaintiffs are not comfortable attending an event at the church<br \/>\nand wouldn&#8217;t go for a number of reasons.&nbsp; What could bother them in<br \/>\naddition to the symbols and literature distribution?&nbsp; The Elmbrook<br \/>\nChurch is well-known for its particularly conservative viewpoints on<br \/>\nlocal and national issues.&nbsp; Non-Christians, it notes, go to hell.&nbsp; Gay<br \/>\npeople, <a href=\"http:\/\/cometothebrook.org\/articlepage.asp?iid=1576&amp;articleid=2\">it teaches<\/a>, act &#8220;contrary to God&#8217;s will.&#8221; And then there is its animosity toward <a href=\"http:\/\/cometothebrook.org\/articlePage.asp?iid=3530&amp;articleid=29\">Oprah Winfrey<\/a><br \/>\nfor being a purveyor of false &#8220;spirituality.&#8221; All in all, it is easy to<br \/>\nunderstand why a lot of folks would feel a chill in the air as they sat<br \/>\ndown in the Elmbrook pews.<\/p>\n<p>There are other venues used by nearby school districts; Elmbrook<br \/>\nSchool District ought to use them also. It is wildly inappropriate to<br \/>\nmake anyone feel like a second-class (and perhaps hell-bound) graduate<br \/>\non this terribly important day in the life of many students and their<br \/>\nfamilies.<\/p>\n<p><font size=\"3\" color=\"#000000\" face=\"Times New Roman\"><span><span style=\"color: black\"><font size=\"5\">To subscribe to &#8220;Lynn v.
