{"id":137,"date":"2009-03-03T18:18:51","date_gmt":"2009-03-03T18:18:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/lynnvsekulow\/2009\/03\/a-pro-abortion-presidential-pu.html"},"modified":"2009-03-03T18:18:51","modified_gmt":"2009-03-03T18:18:51","slug":"a-pro-abortion-presidential-pu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/lynnvsekulow\/2009\/03\/a-pro-abortion-presidential-pu.html","title":{"rendered":"A Pro-Abortion Presidential Push"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"3\">President Obama has wasted little time since taking office staking out positions that are hostile to protecting human life.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"3\">Within days of taking the oath of office, President Obama signed an Executive Order repealing what&#8217;s been called the &#8220;Mexico City Policy&#8221; which correctly barred the use of federal funds by non-governmental agencies abroad for abortion counseling and abortions, sets a disappointing tone that will mean more abortions and less protection for the unborn.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"3\">And now, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2009\/02\/27\/AR2009022701104_pf.html\">presidential push <\/a><\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"3\">to undo regulations that protect the conscience rights of pro-life health care providers.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>And, there&#8217;s more.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The President has nominated <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20090302\/ap_on_bi_ge\/sebelius_hhs_35\">Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius <\/a><\/font><font color=\"#000000\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">to head the Department of Health and Human Services. <span>&nbsp;<\/span>Sebelius has a record of fighting against parental consent and efforts to curb late-term abortions.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>And, there are questions about her association with noted abortionist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kansascity.com\/news\/politics\/story\/1055238.html\">Dr. George Tiller<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"3\">Here&#8217;s the problem: we enshrine abortion and protect the life-ending practices of so-called &#8216;health care professionals&#8217; like Tiller.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>At the same time, though, we won&#8217;t support federal protection for pro-life health care professionals who frequently face discipline and even job loss because of their religious beliefs?<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Absurd.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"3\">These <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aclj.org\/TrialNotebook\/Read.aspx?id=723\">&#8216;conscience clause&#8217; cases <\/a>are an important area of litigation where we&#8217;ve been active now for many years&nbsp;<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"3\">representing health care professionals in many states.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Just a couple of months ago, we secured an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aclj.org\/News\/Read.aspx?ID=3134\">important victory&nbsp;<\/a><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font color=\"#000000\">for pro-life pharmacists when the Illinois Supreme Court <\/font><span>said the religious objections of pro-life health professionals must be considered by the Illinois courts.<\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Barry, this latest move by the Obama Administration &#8211; to overturn the protection afforded to pro-life health care professions &#8211; is very troubling.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>And it&#8217;s certain to guarantee one result &#8211; continuing litigation to protect the &#8216;conscience rights&#8217; of health care professionals.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Health care professionals must be able to practice their profession in a manner consistent with their consciences.
